So I was looking at the MKT character roster and comparing it with the characters that been confirmed for MK9. The follow are the only characters from MKT that have yet to be officially confirmed as playable characters:
-Smoke (MKII/MK3/UMK3/MKT/MKA/UMK)*
-Kabal (appeared in MK3/UMK3/MKT/MKA/UMK)
-Rain (appeared in UMK3/MKT/MKA)
-Kintaro (appeared in MKII/MKT)
-Sheeva (appeared in MK3/UMK3/MKT/UMK)
-Motaro (appeared in MK3/UMK3/MKT/MKA/UMK)
*(MKA = Mortal Kombat Advance, UMK = Ultimate Mortal Kombat)
Now, 22 playable characters have been confirmed to date, and 2 boss characters (Goro and Shao Kahn) have been confirmed, but not as playable characters.
So, if we assume characters like Shao Kahn, Goro, Kintaro and Motaro will be boss-exclusives and not playable (at least not on the main roster, but possibly as DLC characters) that leaves room for Smoke, Kabal, Rain and Sheeva. This would make sense since, after all, if you exclude the boss characters and the duplicate characters (Original Sub-Zero, Human Smoke or Cyborg Smoke) then there are 26 characters in all on the MKT character roster. Perhaps all 26 will be the playable characters but boss characters like Shao Kahn, Goro, Kintaro and Motaro will be in the game somewhere but not playable (or as DLC).
However, if we assume the boss characters Goro and Shao Kahn are included in the 26-character roster, that leaves room for only two more of the above six characters to be include on the roster. Ignoring the possibility of Quan Chi being on that roster (he'll probably be in the game, but that doesn't mean he'll be playable) which two of the above six characters do you think will make the final cut on the MK9 character roster (again, excluding DLC here) and why?
I personally think Kabal and Smoke have the best chance to make the final cut. Smoke because he's been in the series since MKII and has been in every variant of MK3, and there is also a voice clip of his for this game. Kabal because he has been in all of the MK3 variants.
Under these circumstances I don't think Rain would make the cut because he only appeared in the attract mode of UMK3's arcade machines and was only made playable in the console versions of UMK3 and MKT. Sheeva might not make the cut here because while she was in most of the MK3 variants she's quite similar to Goro. I don't see Kintaro making the cut for the same reason as Sheeva. Lastly, I don't think they'll include Motaro, at least not on the character roster, due to programming difficulties of a quadruped character (same excuse they provided when they made him bipedal in MK:AR).
Begin your speculation here. _________________

Well considering weve seen goros x-ray it means hes playable therefore he will take up a character space so thats that, and as for shao kahn i sure hope he will be playable but i gess what i hope doesnt rellly matter... but asuming there will only be two open spaces i agree that smoke and kabal will make it insted of sheeva and rain and wow have we relly confirmed all those characters already? Also, i dont like rain or sheeva anyway so thats all good for me. And Kintaro well theres just no room for three bosses in a game with 26 characters 2 of which already being boses so yeah he would be good as dlc and he wouldnt be that hard to make cause they could use goros skeletal structure model for him. Check out this vid it has goros x ray

I would have to agree with you Amphibious. Kabal and Smoke do look like they would stand a better chance at making the initial roster. I just hope Kabal wouldn't be broken as I have heard he was in the original MK3.

From some videos I've seen, his buzzsaw move was apparently really easy to use in a combo. Using that with his stun move, he could take out most of his opponent's health in one combo. With UMK3, he was re-balanced to reduce the effectiveness of his buzzsaw.
This video shows some ridiculous brutality done by Kabal:

This is a better example of how broken Kabal was in normal MK3:

With that buzzsaw move he was too much. They got rid of that move in UMK3 and left him with his spin run and energy projectile, which made him much more balanced with the other characters.

Just because Goro and Shao Kahn have x-ray moves (at least Goro does so far) doesn't automatically make them playable, and it also doesn't mean they're part of the default 26-character roster. Although I think it's very likely they will be, we shouldn't rule out the possibility that they'll only become playable through DLC.
As cool as both Goro and Shao Kahn are, I'd prefer them not to take up space on the default 26-character roster, since that leaves room for Smoke, Rain, Kabal and Sheeva, rather than only two of these characters. The MKTeam could then release a "boss character DLC" which would include Shao Kahn, Goro and possibly Kintaro and Motaro. _________________

Damn, that was major pwnage from Kabal. I have UMK on the DS, and Kabal still has the buzzsaw move, although it can't be used as much as in that video, as far as I know.
