...I plan on getting the DS though I'm not sure what games are obviously awesome or secretly horrendous so I thought I'd ask y'all.
I know I want to get that Mario Bros. one that came a while ago, as well UMK, but after that I'm lost. Any suggestions?

Well, I know that my bro got one... and he also got this memory card which he was able to download games to, like classic games from other consoles, and play them on the DS (as well as download DS games for free) so I was actually impressed with that.
I don't own the hand-held console myself, but my bro seems to have a blast with it, so it might be worth getting. That's all I can really say about it.

oh god. where to start?
Puzzle Quest, Tetris DS, WarioWare Touched, Brain Age... actually, you know what? it'd probably be easier to ask what DS games you shouldn't invest in.
the DS is an incredible little handheld. I don't know why anyone wouldn't have one. *snuggles her DS Lite*

I really liked WarioWare Smooth Moves so Touched sounds excellent. Tetris is a definite no-brainer. Thanks HippiHana.

I definitely do have to recommend Puzzle Quest for you, if you're into Tetris. it's simple, yet addictive. and please please get WarioWare Touched. and while you're at it, get WarioWare Twisted for GBA. the WarioWare games just keep being innovative and fun, so you really can't go wrong with any of them. =D

You should probably also consider some none obvious choices like Battles of the Prince of Persia, Advance Wars DS, Final Fantasy III.

Although i don't own a nintendo ds i've played it at my cousin's place before since he owns one but my reccomendation on games you should get for it i have two of them 1.Mario Kart Ds if you liked the n64 one back in the days we'll you'll fall in love with this one even more it's just that great. And the second one would have to be Kirby Canvas curse as i also played that one at his house and ign's 9.0 outstanding review score for it speaks the truth it's one hell of an addictive game also.
