That couldn't have been an official strategy guide. Johnny Cage was a kangaroo for his animality in MKT and that was the only guess I had.

When you go into the settings/audit screens for the arcade versions of MK2 and MK3 you see a lot of weird things. These screens have counters of how many times each player was chosen, how many total hours of 1 or 2 player games were played, total games, number of continues and stuff like that.

But, the screens also list things like "Watchdogs" which refers to chunks of code that act as watchdogs, looking for errors in the game. When an error is detected, the counter increases. If you run the arcade games in MAME you can use MAME cheats to override memory values and you can intentionally increase the Watchdog counter.

MK2 and MK3 also contain joke counters. Counters designed to create mystery. In MK2 it lists the last game audit as "Kano Transformations" which is supposed to make people think you can transform into Kano somehow, and so they pick Shang Tsung and keep playing as him trying every possible morph, thus eating through tons of quarters.

In MK3 they have "Johnny Cage Transformations" as a joke to try and get people to spend more money finding a morph that doesn't exist.

IIRC UMK3 doesn't have any joke counters, probably because the counter list is full of character counters.

I guess you could say it is since it is deliberately tricking someone in order to gain an advantage. MK has always been about creative marketting. Kombat codes and fatalities were added partially for the gameplay aspect of it, but mostly because it creates information that Midway could then leverage with magazines in order to better promote the game. And once the magazines bit and they were getting that added attention, they could leverage that with arcade owners to get more people interested in having the MK arcade games in their arcades.

The MK team has a very good understanding of how to get the masses interested in their game.
