does anyone else get long loading times with this site? or maybe its just a proximity thing on my part
also, are stickys considered dead if there 6 months old?

I get some longer loading times after posting and going back to the Board Index, but other than that, things seem to be okay for me.
as for the sticky question, I'd say that you can respond to a sticky at any time, as long as it's relevant to the topic. =)

The site always hangs when it is connecting to the paypal domain. Maybe the server is forced to wait for paypal to respond with whatever data before it continues to serve the rest of the page.

It's not the PayPal service, that's just the last thing that loads on the page, if not the Google ads, so you see it on there (presuming you have Firefox). The index has always taken a while to load, since before those were added, but just the index regularly. If it's an active day it may take a while for each page.

Load times have nothing to do with how crappy your computer is, unless you're sitting on a 286. You can have a fucking BlueGene/L sitting your bedroom, but it won't make much difference if the connection to the interweb (or a particular site for that matter) is total pants.

Depending on which TMK link you're looking at, and what theme you're using, the actual paypal relevant form occurs about 25% into the code, around line 323. So paypal is definitely not the last thing to be loaded. Firefox actually displays that it is waiting a response form paypal.
Mr Sparkle will test his theory next time (when he's not lazy and watching pr0n all the time) by blocking paypal altogether in his router and see what happens.

Whether it is or isn't the last thing, it will take the same amount of time to load the index. I've been on this site for years and have been through four computers, it has always taken a while to load the index for me.

Sparkle disagrees.
1. For starters, Mr Sparkle has AdBlock Plus installed which removes all ads on the site and prevents them from loading in the first place. Despite all that, the index page still stalls when loading.
2. When the index page stalls, the page load is sometimes interrupted right were "Favourite Actor poll" link is located in the side menu bar. Guess what's after that link? The PayPal form block.
3. The interrupted load may also depend on how fast is your pipe, and how quickly the browser gets the 404 response.
3. Mr Sparkle blocked the PayPal domain in his router and the index page does not stall that bad any more. There are still some lags, but not as dramatic.
Therefore, with his infinite wisdom, Mr Sparkle concludes that PayPal is most likely the cause.
He suggests to comment out the following line, and see what happens:

p.s.. Sparkle also advises the admin to check if the method for adding a PayPal donation box to web pages has changed since the birth of TMK.

Okay, so you've proven PayPal makes the page load a little longer, I never noticed. It doesn't make that much of a difference, I just visit a different forum while the page loads.

Thanks for the suggestions guys, I admit...TMK has taken a beating over the years with lots of crazy forum mods ect... there are lot of bugs causing a slower page parsing rate. But thanks to Mr. Sparkle, I will look into that PayPal code...I always never liked that code when I added it to the site, it was very "messy" code and very complex, I had a feeling it might cause slight delays...
