I received a phone call from a staff member at my school informing me that last week, on July 25, 2007, two of my classmates (a guy and a girl) were in a bad car wreck.
The girl is in critical condition and it's not certain if she'll make it, and sadly, the guy passed away.

my best friend is currently in a private school in Utah where contact with her is severely limited. She was close friends with both people.
She won't be back to her home state for another 4-5 months and there's no way she'd find out. My best bet to tell her is by either through another person or a letter. And even if I did tell her, I don't know how to start.

Can you guys help?

well, it wont do her any favours, she either has to leave school early to go to the funeral, or she'll be stuck in school depressed for god knows how long, and probably fail

Jay, I gotta tell you, your first choice is the best choice you have. Write her the letter. Don't be afraid to let her know if something's gone wrong. This truly is sad to hear man, but you need to tell her what's going on. If there's a friend who's in critical condition and it's uncertain whether or not she'll make it, she needs to know. She also needs to know that friend has passed away. The longer you wait, the worse she's gonna feel if you don't let her know. If you don't tell her and she finds out you knew, then she's gonna be mad at you. Write her a letter and tell her that her friends need her. Explain to her that there was an accident, one of her close friends sadly passed and one's in critical condition and they said they're not sure whether or not she'll make it. This is hard, I understand, but she needs to know. You're doing the right thing by letting her know. I'm sure she'd do the exact same thing if she were in your shoes. My sympathy goes to you, the ones in the accident, and most of all, to your friend who has to learn this horrible news. I'm so sorry to hear this.

I see your point, and it is justified, but no. She'll actually be hurt more and for longer if she finds out that she missed the funeral. Besides, there are options in schools for when there is a death of someone that close to you.

***UPDATE***

For one, the surviving girl is going to get better.

Secondly, my struggle with breaking the news to my friend in Utah is over.
I called her mom and she wants me to write a letter. But instead of sending it to my friend, I would send it to my friend's school counselor. And it would be up to the counselor on how to tell to my friend.
That way, I'm not the bearer of bad news.

I sent it a couple of days ago, so let's hope that she takes it in a healthy way.

Thanks for the support, you guys.

cool, nice to hear:)

though, while the counciler has degree's to make him/her well adapt to this kind of situation, isn't your friend going to resent the fact that you told everyone except her?

You're not a people person, are you?

My friend won't resent me. For one, I did not tell other people. Most of the almuni at my school aready knew way before I did. Secondly, there's no way I can tell my friend. Her parents prefers that her counselor tell her. I can't make phone calls and all the letters I send are screened. So regardless, the counselor would know, therefore it makes more sense for the counselor to tell my friend.
