His appearence was explained in an unused biography for MK Gold in a Prima strategy guide. It said that he was sliced in half by Kung Lao and he was later ressurected by Shinnok, who Baraka served.
But his new Gold biography had him wandering the realms since Trilogy and eventually serving Quan Chi with having "other motives". However, because of his canon appearence, I'm going to assume that his scar is just a wound from a battle with Kung Lao that he survived, which he healed with huge staples. This doesn't contradict any of the canon story, since it hasn't been debunked by the MK team and Baraka has worn costumes that doesn't reveal his torso/abdomen.
I also think the MK team poked fun at this concept in the Armageddon intro. They had Kung Lao stab Baraka in the chest while fighting aerialy.
What do you guys think?

I don't think even a tarkatan could handle that kind of injury and live. I'd assume Shinnok brought him back but his bio really screws that up. He could've been resurrected and directed to Edenia without his own knowing. But the more likely assumption is the efficiently canon version that you stated. Still...I think my way is more logical.

However, Baraka's wound may not have been that bad. Sure it could have been deep. But remember, he's a demon. Hey be able to take a lot more. Plus, it's not like he was completely cut in half. I'm thiking maybe a 3-5 inch cut up and down his chest might have been all he suffered.

Possibly, the bio was just removed. They probably didn't have enough time to make a new model from the old biography.
Another point, wouldn't the slice go into his heart if it went into his chest?
Demon or not, a slice into the heart means you are a goner. This confuses me. I've always thought about this, but never had a real and correct answer.

in one game, i think that is deception, a image of baraka and milena from gold says that the staples are from a kung lao fatality

...I remember reading that now that you mention it. And Shinnok would be the only sorcerer with the sensibility to ressurect him. Shinnok likely assigned him to Quan Chi and thus, another bump creased.

this is tough  if he didnt die from being sliced in half and has those huge staples on his chest and head in gold and some how dont have them in decption then.......it just more proves my point that the extra chars. in gold's rouster's storys are NOT cannon.
i bet that was REALY confuseing

I still think my theory works out best (when it comes to Baraka's staples) considering the information we're given from the games.
Every additional character's part in Gold is canon because a lot of what is said in Deadly Alliance and Deception support it.
For instance:
Mileena getting improsined by Kitana
Kitana and Goro making peace (temporarily)
Cyrax joining the Special Forces
and so on.

...yep, Baraka was clearly cut in half.
The way I see it, he survived. MKII, Kung Lao lays waste to him. Nice deep slice. He lived. Somebody stapled him together and he never died. Following into Gold he just kind of walked into Edenia for the hell of it and Quan Chi was like 'sup, holme skillet, Edenia much?' and Baraka was like 'hEll yEah!'
Cut in half he may have been, but no where does it mention him being revived...no where.

Okay, he has staples running down his entire body. So he was obviously "fatalitized" on. But I still think he was just cut badly, not cut in half.
Everything else you said pretty much covers his deal-i-o in Gold... except that his run-in with Kung Lao most likely happened during or after Shao Kahn's invasion.

What's on Baraka's back? Are there staples there, too?
