I was reading my history textbook, and it mentions king Darius of the Persian Empire and Lui Bang who founded the Han Dynasty in China. Do you think there's any connection between these men and the MK characters? _________________

He´s not even from Earthrealm. He´s from Seido (Orderrealm)
Doc:
I don´t know any of those historical people, but the name ´Darrius´ seems to be quite popular in movies and games. There is IMO no connection _________________ DEVELOPER DIARIES

lots of games/films use historically relevant name's with little in common with the original person.
you could have done a quick wiki search.

Never trust wiki, it's mostly lies, unless you got other proof to back it up.
As for wiether or not their bassed off them, I doubt it. Though I don't knpw that Darious much, the odds of them being simular are low. About the only few characters that are bassed off things, that I know of, are Fujin an Raiden (Based off the Japanese gods, Fujin and Raijin of Wind and Lightning respectively), Liu Kang is based off Bruce Lee, Johnny Cage is loosely based off of Juad Cluad Van Dam (sp?), and that's about it. _________________

There might be some connection. The MK team has to get the names from somewhere.

That's what I was thinking. Lui Bang and Lui Kang just sounded too similar. _________________

i really don't think that they named it after them it was probably just a quinceadence. because the names that they came up with don't sound like they namded after a specifc person. _________________ ??????

I think both of you are on opposite extremes.
Wikipedia is indeed a reliable source when used with emphasis on references.
For instance, if I want to read about Abe Lincoln, Wikipedia would be a great place to go, but I should keep in mind to take a quick glance at what sites are used to back up what is stated in the article.
However, Wikipedia isn't too factual when it comes to video game continuity. Since Wikipedia can be edited by virtually anyone, you can easily look up Scorpion and read that he is Sub-Zero's long lost brother. People mistakingly cite rumors as facts so Wikipedia is often the target of vandalism and fallibility.
Also, most information used in the MK articles are extracted from the games, so all text per se is merely one person's interpretation of what he or she gets from the games. You are much better off learning about Mortal Kombat by reading all the character biographies on a site such as TotalMK or MKOnline.
To sum it all up, Wikipedia is a great place for research, but it is your responsibility to validate its information by using its references and citations.

Since you failed to bring us back to topic in that last post, I shall do so then.
Doc Savage,
When it comes to naming fighters in Mortal Kombat, I think the decision is usually biased on what sounds "good", you know? Kombatants with "Asian" names usually have common characters and pieces that are put together.
Shang Tsung, Quan Chi, and Liu Kang can be an example of this.
Other kombatants such as Li Mei and Reiko are misuses of real names (Li Mei usually written as Mei Li and Reiko a common female name); Hotaru and Shujinko (meaning Firefly and Protagonist); Bo Rai Cho is a great example of pseudocharacter use, it's basically a play on the Spanish word "borracho" meaning "drunken man".
As for Darrius, I think that falls into the modern name category. Kira, Sonya, Cage, Jade, and Tanya are names used commonly today, but some spellings are somewhat differed for that "uniqueness" quality.
If Darius and Liu Bang had any real impact on the name decisions for Darrius and Liu Kang, it's a considerably vaild deduction since MK has proven to use both Ancient History and Mythology for story, art design, and premise. _________________ Very Angry Girls Instigate Negative Attitudes.
