Yea, but often times they name the characters off of other people as well, like Tonya and Sonya were Ed Boons sisters, hence where they got the names for them. Though you are right on the rest.
Again however, from what I do know of Darius and Liu Bang, I don't think there is any character basis of them, for as I have stated Liu Kang was supose to be bassed on Bruce Lee, though the name still could have come from another chinese source.

Of course, there are competent reasons why the specific name was chosen. But that wasn't what I was trying to get across. I was trying to argue that names are chosen merely because they sound good. I know that Tanya and Sonya were named after Boon's sisters, but like I said, those are unique names. I put them in the modern nams category ergo I didn't list the specific reason the names were chosen.
Ed Boon has a brother named Mike, but do you see a character named "Mike" in MK? I can probably see a character in the future named "Miike" (Mee-eekeh) or "Maikeru", but I doubt "Mike" would make the cut simply because it's too common. I would love to know how all the MK names were chosen, but most are obvious, and for some, one can only guess. I have made another topic that talks all about this subject, but I think it's buried somewhere in the site. I can't seem to find it.

I agree that Darius and Liu Bang weren't used as a basis for the character backgrounds, but like I said, I do believe that the names could have derived from these two men. I wouldn't necessarily exclude them as a source, though there could be many.
Although, it's interesting to note that Liu Kang had a completely different name and story.

Seeing that the original source was Japanese, it's possible to nix Liu Bang since he was Chinese, but knowing that the creative team uses Japanese and Chinese myth interchangibly, there is no real evidence pointing any direct way.

Very good points, though I supose the only way this topic debate could come to an end, would be to have one of the creators, themselves point out the true origin of the names.

i think it would be a good idea if the MK team did a weekly podcast or webcast, its not gonna happen but one can dream.
