While the Mortal Kombat universe has been dormant for the last few months, aside from the smattering of news about Ultimate Mortal Kombat for Nintendo DS, we're beginning to see some signs of activity at the house of Mortal Kombat. Lately, we have started to hear a few rumblings around the Chicago-based developer in regards to the next title in the Mortal Kombat franchise, aka Mortal Kombat 8. The MK Team has in the past gone on the record in stating the the next Mortal Kombat game for this generation's consoles will feature a totally reinvented formula than the previous console-specific Mortal Kombat titles. Recently, the direction that Midway is considering on taking their most prized franchise has started to take shape.
A post on the IGN Boards (highlighted by a MK Online user http://www.mortalkombatonline.com/content/forum/showmessage.cds?id=108471), brought up the prospect that Midway's next Mortal Kombat title will straight up be a Mortal Kombat vs. DC Comics fighting game, in the spirit of the Marvel vs. Capcom series of fighting games. While this rumor has been around in various iterations ever since X-Men vs. Street Fighter was released in 1996, it appears that this latest reincarnation seems to carry a bit more weight this time around. As incredulous as this rumor has sounded ever since it first made the rounds more than ten years ago, TRMK has confirmed from our own sources that the next Mortal Kombat game for the current generation of consoles - Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 - will indeed be a "Versus" style game.

I don't think it will happen, at least in the main series. There might be a spinoff, but it won't have anything to do with the story line.
I think MK8 will be Mortal Kombat only

anything is possible, and probably will happen, with almost a mathematical certainty. unfortunately usually at the end of a franchise.

That "I-have-a-friend-who-works-for-Midway" bit sounds like a load of crap.
But regardless, this is the run-down of past games:
*Ever since the series launched, all numerical installments have been versus games.
*All adventure games were either a canon prequel or a noncanon spin-off based on the primary games.
Conclusion:
So, based off of this, Mortal Kombat 8 will be a versus game, within the MK canon.
If there would ever be a cross-over, it would definetely be non-canon.
Also, it would NOT be a major installment and entitled MK9, MK10, etc.
It would probably be named along the lines of "Midway VS DC".

Just because those games may be crap, it doesn't mean that the MK team won't use the new engine effectively

how else can a FP beet-em up be? as far as im concerned its bad cause of the FP perspective and the multi-player split screen thing. i just think if they want to use a FPS engine seriously there not going to use it for 1-on-1 combat.
metroid prime is a perfect example how a good FP adventure games can be. just an opinion though
also, maybe MK8 is currently just a code name, all 21st century titles haven't been numerical(cept the re-releases) why start now?

I doubt it will be in the first-person perspective. They'll use it as a different 3d engine, but they won't change the entire format, just because the other games using this engine did it that way.

The Unreal Engine 3 has a lot of different capabilities for all kinds of syles of gaming. Mainly what Midway will be using is it's graphics/polygraph coding. The game from what I heard will have the same "grungy"/dark feel that Gears of War has, but it will stay true to the side view combat used in previous installments. Midway is also trying to obtain the Euphoria engine, which for those who don't know, is basically a skeletal system that uses physics to make the animations.

I don't believe anything in that article. Midway wouldn't risk the MK franchise by trying to invent something new...HOWEVER they might be working on 2 MK games, one might be this Vs style game, the other MK8...that is a more believable scenario.

...I'd rebel that decision. I was hoping this insertion would be a delayed release so it wouldn't be another rushed project. I think we'd all rather one game a year later with all the kinks out than two games, rushed as usual.
Vs. style games I've always had a taste for on the other hand, though MK's connection to DC comics is not existent. MK vs. SF would be a far more suitable title, however SF is dismal to modern gamers. I don't think any vs. game would run well beside MK.

I really REALLY hope this isn't true, I couldn't stand the Marvel vs Capcom series, the only Versus title I could handle would be Mortal Kombat vs Killer Instinct or Mortal Kombat vs Street Fighter, it really doesn't appeal to me the thought of having Shang Tsung suck the soul out of Superman or Ant Boy...
