So, recently a member here made a topic named "dcu?" in which he was asking just what the DC Universe was and what it means. I answered his question as well as added in an idea I had been pondering for awhile. And it was within my own comment that I realized that this game wont be as bad as we're expecting. Allow me to go into detail:

DC owns the rights to many translation liscences of manga, in my example I gave to Smoke, I named Tenjho Tenge. I mentioned this fact due to the off chance that they could use a character from a manga they have rights to and put them into this game. As slim as the idea is, it's still plausible for me. Why? They do want to put in reconizable charcters, and a manga series like Tenjho Tenge which has sold almost 11 million copies, and even here stateside still stands strong in the average twenties on most popular book lists, would be a good reason for a character or two to cross over into the game.

But this wasn't what this thought here is about, not entirely. See, I am a hardcore gamer, but I am also a rather big anime and manga fan. Now, for those of you who've never heard of Tenjho Tenge, here is a basic summery:

There's a special high school named The Todou Academy where the teachers and staff believe in bringing back the old ways and wish to restore the honor of Martial Arts. Two problematic street fighters named Suichiro Nagi and Bob Makihara, nick named the Knuckle Bomb, transfer to this school in hopes of conquering it, making it the 100th school that they beat all the students in. But the duo soon realize that they're pathetic fighters compaired to what this school has to offer, and their mayhem has invocted the wrath of the Executive Commity, a group of elite students that is designed for keeping the rules of the school enforced, by any means.

So now that you have an idea of how the story goes, let me explain the history of this manga series.

When the manga was first made, it was made by a sex manga company. This was a work unlike most they've done, but they handled it well. It was still, mind you, filled with sex scenes and the like galore, but it was all for purpose, not for pleasure. Each act was usually done to show a characters nature, infulence the story in some way, and even as a way to pry further into a characters beliefs.

Now, when DC got the rights to make the english version, they did some HEAVY work on it. Many, and I mean MANY scenes were edited, and even a chapter or two were completely taken out. But despite the butchering of the manga, it still retains the key thing that made Tenjho Tenge what it was: a manga about brutal ass kickings and some sex. They still kept some scenes of sex, though they are censored artfully, and they even left in various rape scenes that were important to character development.

Now, what's my point in all this? My point is that the original Tenjho Tenge made Mortal Kombat look like childs play. DC cut just enough out of Tenjho Tenge to make it suitable for teens. Ringing any bells? Though watered down in comparison, it's still a devistating and brutal manga. My point is if this is what they did with a manga like this, we can expect we really wont lose that much from Mortal Kombat in this cross over game. We'll lose just enough to make the T rating, litterally. Which means granted, we'll lose fatalities, but I know they can make up for it.

Interesting points, but one flaw I see. DC licenses Tenjho Tenge and all it's manga under the CMX brand. This is done to distant DC from it, so t hey can appear more 'adult', be taken more seriously when translating manga, and basically seem less of a DC company.

MK vs DC is just that, DC, thus you won't necessarily be seeing the same image. Where CMX allowed for more brutal, explicit, mature mangas, DC comics does not. Don't get me wrong DC comics can be mature and dark, just not on the level of Tenjho Tenge, which happens to be one of my all time favourite mangas.

I do understand your points though, and to a degree I agree, DC is quite prepared to allow a lot in their products, however they still have an image to maintain. That image is what limits MK vs DC.

It's actually stuff like this that I'm expecting. Brutal stuff, just not MK brutal. Like you'll probably see a lot of beating, stabbing, etc, but no ripping heads, arms, whatever off.

If you're after brutal, vicious finishers I think MK vs DC will sate you, however, if you're after over-the-top gore that has defined MK, then you'll sorely be disappointed.

Yeah as I mentioned before read Frank Miller's The Dark Knight Returns. Its about a Batman who is old and tired of all the crime coming back no matter how much he puts them in jail. So what does he do the the Joker? Snaps his fing neck after smashing his spine. He also absolutely messes up several people in the comic which is pretty brutal. This wasn't sold as a comic for mature readers but was still quite violent. If the finishing moves in this game as brutal then maybe I'll put some support behind the game.

I'm glad to see you all get where I was going with the post, and I am also glad to see I'm not the only anime/manga fan here. And Crispy you have a point on CMX branding. And yea, I would be pretty damn shocked to see a DC comic on level with even the butchered Tenjho Tenge.

Following with my point, I think that it can be safe to say we will see some brutal stuff; Boon does want to keep everything fair and split down the middle for DC and MK, and DC can appreciate the violence, so we can expect high brutality. Maybe even the actual Brutalities.
