It's an interview with Mink, the director of the new MK movie. It's the latest I think, done in February. The website looks a bit fishy in my opinion but Mink at IMDB didn't oppose to it when someone posted it on his board or anything.

Really, this film should work as a "Batman Begins" style rebooting of the franchise. Focus on maybe one character as opposed to three/ four to follow. This would definitely help with character development a la Legend of Chun Li (new street fighter film being developed).

True. It would add some difference and something fresh. Just like MKC did. Speaking of the new SF movie, though I'm not a SF fan, I think it would be great if that movie would turn out good, it could affect MK in a good way. Same goes with the upcoming Tekken movie.

...as I mentioned in my topic 'Street Fighter may help...' in this forum, I agree that SF and Tekken movies will aid the idea of a new Mortal Kombat movie. I still worry that because SF wants to be based solely on Chun-Li that Mortal Kombat will attempt the same story basis; one character's story. These side stories always bomb. A movie based on Liu Kang or Sub-Zero or Scorpion (maybe there's an exception for Scorpion) alone will fail in attention, even if it excels in quality (it won't).

A prequel or revamping remake is easily a better idea. As we all know, those don't flop...as often.

I think I was misunderstood there. I know that if it's just focussing on one character and their history etc etc. Like Mythologies then it may possibly be less hard hitting and won't sell the film without first introducing the full story. What I meant was that the film should follow a story in which it follows one character (like Bruce Wayne) instead of a group of three people as it makes for an easier to follow cast instead of throwing in a group of seven people then splitting up and going to face a plethora of fighters (I may be hinting at Annihilation here Razz).

If we follow, say, Liu Kang and establish his character and backstory as a shaolin warrior who goes to the tournament to discover these mystical warriors etc etc.

Annihilation...well, let's just skip that one. Analyzing the first movie, I'd agree that they didn't bring much emotion forth per character. Maybe a little Liu Kang, but Sub-Zero and Scorpion, two major roles, were thrown in as cool scene/kill and move on fighters, when their adaptive and intriguing stories could've boosted interest and possibly emotion.

Many people criticize the movie's special effects, which are of course out-dated, but it's simply the script combined with the director's take on heart gripping that could easily make this movie better than it sounds.

I enjoyed the first film actually. I thought Paul Anderson did really well with the script he was given and also being faithful to the original influence of Mortal Kombat the game - Enter the Dragon. Although you will get a lot of people who grew up with the later games post MK-Trilogy or even, dare I say, post MK Deadly Alliance. My personal opinion is that the series lost its charm after MK4. After getting its spotlight in 3-D I think it lost its appeal appearing to be less realistic (well the photo-digital characters were as real as we'd get!)

Anyway, as I was saying that most people would notice that there was no blood or gore in the film, but limitations arose as it was to be marketed as a certain type of film. Producers wanting a less gore more action stylized fiml.

Hopefully with the recent trend in desensitized violence on cinema screens, that a director (possibly mink) can handle the material given to him (in this case a violent game complete with dismembered limbs and fatalities galore). I hope that he can revive the goodness that was MORTAL KOMBAT!!! (cue music.)

I think you're somewhat too optimistic, and we'll find endless similarities to the original. If the original never existed perhaps it would be easier for a director's mind to start an entirely different breed from scratch, but alas it did, and I don't think Mink is that director.

On a hopeful note, perhaps it will be darker, with less cheese, and binding back stories. Hell I'll see the movie no matter what anyway.

I really don't want another movie to be made. They're just gonna mess it up.

Oh ye of little faith, with all sorts of new movies based on comics turning out to be amazing movies (Dark Knight and Ironman as examples) the next MK shall not let us down.

Those are films based on comics.
I have yet to see a decent movie based on a game that doesn't muck up the storyline.

The same could have been said about comics at one time, is what my point was.

And I think you're being a bit picky, the first MK movie was a great movie, and the first Tomb Raider really wasn't too bad. And the first AVP was sick as hell.

Comics are different than games because most popular comics preclude continuity with so many series and entries. A movie like Batman just has to follow the basic premise in the comics and fill in the gaps with a third-party writer.

A lot of games series, however have a thorough storyline. In this case, Mortal Kombat has a really great storyline from the first game that still keeps on adding on with each installment. A film version would only take the storyline and tweak it until it molds into a mainstream plot. The first film was good, but it changed a lot. The second film was a total mess and the series had a story all on its own.

So my point is that a film version would do the same as its predecessors and result in an exploitation of a Mortal Kombat story. So I'd rather it not be made unless the MK team made it themselves.

(Or if mink was a hardcore MK fan. Razz )

I guess from my view... I don't see how anything Tabias, Boon, and Vogel has done with the story as any different then what happens in comics. The Mk story line has been modified so many times over... Examples:

Raiden: In MK1 he was a bored Thunder God that blew up the earth after winning the MK tournament. Next thing we know in MK2 he is the leader of the Earthrealm warriors and sort of like their gaurdian.

Johnny Cage: Died more times then I can count, but his story always gets written off, and he only really dies twice.

Shiva: In konquest mode of MKDA it said Kano had killed her, yet there she was ready to go in MKA

Shao Kahn was killed in MKDA, yet in reality it was just a clone he had prepared.

Goro: Can never make up his mind if he wants to be allies with Kitana or Kahn.

Most every character ending: We never know what's true or not till the next MK game, it's like waiting for the conclusion of a comic in the next issue. And even then, nothing is ever set in stone.

See where i am going with this?

I'm just saying, we've had some success stories, give Mink a chance, he may just do us right.

Actually Silent Hill has broken the trend of badvideo game based movies and has proved that there is still hope, much the waythe original Mortal Kombat did back in 1995. Even if it is bad just think, Uwe Boll didn' make it.
