Post subject: Cartoon Physics

It does not make much sense to me. Do you ever think that the kombatants are following basic cartoon physics? For example, how logical is it that something like Scorpion's sword would not cut off somebody's arm on the first slash? Or if Ermac hits somebody in the belly in his axe, would they not get chopped in half in real life?

They also defy the effects of impact. Like on the first fall off of sky temple, you'd expect the kombatant's neck to break or head to splatter on impact. And how is it remotley possible for somebody to be kicked or punched at a rock solid wall and break it (reference to the wall in Beetle Lair) without splattering like they would most likely do in real life?

One last thing I'd like to point out is the amount of cuts or damages to the skin during and after kombating. My best example would be hitting Li Mei with a weapon so many times, and in the end she doesn't show a mark or bruise. I chose her because I think she has the least amount of cloathing.

I am not complaining, but I find it really interesting to comparing the effects in the game to what would happen in real life (Which is something the Mythbusters would be able to test).

The only characters I'd expect to survive these would be:
Liu Kang - Because he's a corpse
Havik - Because his body defy's what a human could survive
Raiden - HE'S A GOD FOR CRYING OUT LOUD, SO HE CAN'T DIE
Scorpion - I don't know for sure, but I think he's undead (it's the eyes!)

I just think it's all cartoon physics. What do you think?

I understand what you are saying Zoran but can you imagine how boring games like MK, Soulcalibur, street fighter...actually, just about any fighting game would be if you rocked the apposing fighter with an uppercut and he passed out...also, the characters would not be able to shoot fireballs or ice at people if the games were based on established logic, its the fantasy element that makes things interesting.

I agree that cartoonish physics make games like SoulCalibur, Street Fighter and Mortal Kombat fun.

I can also agree that realistic physics can be just as fun. Take Fight Night as an example.

Fantasy cartoon violent physics are fun! Realistic physics are more for other types of games, just not fighting.

The amount of realism in a game is really based on the game in question. There are plenty of very realistic games out here, mainly first person shooters and driving games, which works great. But it doesn't work for all game, and it would especially not work for MK games.

MK was made to be over the top, it was always supposed to take things to far. Even back when the original MK came out, it was over the top. If you uppercut a person in real life, liters of blood will not come shooting out of him, and it's very unlikely that he would be launched six feet into the air either. But these are the things that makes MK fun. The fact that you can knock your opponent down six stories (at the Sky Temple) forcing them to land on their neck, the follow them by jumping down, and both Kombatants can continue on fighting, is why you play the game in the first place. It's that cartoony/ over the top feel the gives MK it's charm.
