I myself am an old MK fan.
I don't think it's the change that bothered them, but the comparison of MK4 to other 3D fighting games at the time.
I never bothered to compare. I've always viewed the game as a revolutionary part of the MK franchise. There are features in MK4 that still don't exist in other MK games, such as:
- Quick-step pivots
- Character-screen interaction (i.e. blood on the screen, them on the screen)
- Video endings
- Running (MKDA and up)
- Team Mode
- Tournament Mode
- In-game cheats
- Quan Chi (except for MKDA, of course)
- Endurance Mode (I ain't counting that Unchained bullshit)
- Classic screaming, oh that beautiful, beautiful screaming.
MK4 is, and will always be, my favorite video game. |
It would be nice to see blood cover the screen again. that and give Raiden more hilariously indistinguishable lines.

MK4 was the first 3D MK game, but it held on to many 2D elements of the past MK games. Ya know, Low Punch, High Punch, Low Kick, High Kick, Run, Block, that sorta stuff. The classic stuff we've come to know and love. The game is pretty much in 2D. I mean, yeah, there is a side step in the game, but it requires a button to be pressed. You can't just side step normally like you can in like lets say Soul Calibur, which is a FULL 3D fighting game. (I LOVE Soul Calibur too.) Also, the fatalities are in 3D as well, but that doesn't bother me. The gameplay still plays like a 2D MK game, and that's good enough for me. _________________ YOU HAVE FOUND ME! Rumours going around that MK9 kould be a remake of MK1-3.
I still hold on to my original thought: Attack of the Gods.
All the best,

Vomit...
If there are any plans for a 2D MK, it should be a reworking of all of the original 2D games and come as an addition to the new 3D(!) MK9...
Who'd pay top dollar for a 2D fighter these days? Not me... _________________

I would. Of course the game would have to be worthy of the MK name, and hopefully not be overly flooded with new characters. If it is 2D, thats great, but give the fans what they want. Their favorite characters. _________________ YOU HAVE FOUND ME! NOW PROVE YOURSELF! -Reptile

MKII was pretty damn awesome.
If they're going for 2D gold, then we're talkin the MKII engine.
MK9 could be similar to MKII, but with new characters, new stages, and lots of special features.
I still look at MKII as the greatest 2D MK ever, and if MK9 were to be similar, then I'm 100% positive the game would sell. _________________ YOU HAVE FOUND ME! NOW PROVE YOURSELF! -Reptile

It was, but it would have to have a shitload of extras, and have an extra buttload of awesomeness because it's pretty dated now you have to admit, even by 2D standards.
I gotta agree though, MK2 was pretty sweet. _________________

I still like to hold MKII tournaments with my friends every so often.
I don't got a PS3. Sadly, I only have the Midway Arcade Treasures 2 version, and while that version has many noticeable problems, it's still playable. _________________ YOU HAVE FOUND ME! NOW PROVE YOURSELF! -Reptile
