Only problem is - and film companies are still too stupid to realize this - is that if they dumbed down a story that has already been established, then the movie will flop as no fan would want to watch it, and all the "possible" new fans wouldn't like it either because it's not what they would be expecting (expections for something relating to MK are: blood; gore; fatalities; brutal fights; interesting characters). In both MK movies we get none of these - and it's one of the reasons why the films flopped!
If the games are popular enough to get 6 sequels, about 7 spin-offs, 2 movies, a cartoon series, a comic series, and a number of other media - then I'm pretty sure it's popular enough to make shit-loads of money if they actually made a GOOD movie that has the same feel and vibe as the games.
So if they want to make a film that maximizes profit - make it like the games! But again, companies are too stupid to realize this and think giving it a lower age rating means more people are likely to see it - and oh how stupid are they!! Problem is, it's the fans who suffer the most! |
I love you.
Your post is nothing but truth. Even with Final Fantasy, one of the biggest selling gaming franchises in the world, had a movie that flopped big time, because it had nothing to do with the game.
And then you have Resident Evil. Despite Hollywood's add-ins, all three movies remained fixed around the Umbrella Corp, and Alice's fucked up life. They even made sure to include Nemesis, though that was in the second movie.
And then there's Mortal Kombat. The first movie did prettty well for a new franchise. The based all around the first MK game, even with the appearances of Kitana, Reptile, and Shao Kahn. The second movie, however, was not connected to any particular, and was more like a crappy combination of MK2 and MK3. Famous moves became cheap highlights (i.e. Sindel's hair throw and Jax's ground pound), and many of the characters lacked an actual reason for being in the movie. And therefore, the movie sucked.
Overall, I say the greatest video game-based movie would be this:

Eh, the best for me was MK the movie, cause it got to the theme of the game, but not too much.
It was good enough for a movie, and I don't care it wasn't as gory and bloody as the game... Cause it wasn't a game, it was a movie.

Contradiction anyone?
And being a movie instead of a game doesn't mean it has to be less gory, just beacue it's a film. If it's a film based on a game, then it should have the same themes and overall "feel" of the games. The MK flims did not do this and if anything they tried appealing to kids way too much.

If I wanted to see a movie as gory as the game, I would've made it myself in Flash with sprites (and I did! ) |
You know, both Silent Hill and Resident Evil are gory games, and those movies were gory as well.
What made Mortal Kombat any different? _________________ I'm gonna marry Quan Chi some day...

Am I the only one who still enjoys the original MK flick? I still think it was a great movie. Ok, so the story wasn't exactly that of the game, and the preformances were not not Oscar winning stuff, and yes Goro looked like ass, but it still did what it set out to do. It was an exciting martial arts action movie. It was based of a video game, and felt like a video game movie. I still think it's one of the best video game to big screen transitions yet.
As regards to WB doing good dark adult movies, I've got three words for y'all: The Dark Knight! Batman is such an easy character to make all kiddie and childish, but they avoided this at all costs, to make it as mature as possible. If they get their paws on the next MK flick and play it in a similar way, then we could really be in for a treat. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

That's what I'm saying for the past 5 or more posts. _________________

So, what made it a good movie?
Don't get me wrong, I agree with you on liking the movie, but with all the flaws you pointed out, I can't help but wonder how we still do. _________________ I'm gonna marry Quan Chi some day...

The fight scenes were great, Raiden, Shang Tsung, Kano and Johnny Cage were excellent, Sonya was quite the babe, Fear Factory were on the soundtrack (during the Cage/ Scorpion fight in hell, and all in all the movie was just good fun. Not mind blowing or anything, just good fun. And that was good enough for me. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

Couldn't agree with you more.
To deathrider, I hear you, man. Kitana was always the reason I watched the movie, despite her not even being in the first game.
It would be nice, however, to see a movie that fully caters to the atmosphere of the franchise. _________________ I'm gonna marry Quan Chi some day...

Kitana and Sonya were pretty good babes, but they didn't make the movie in my opinion. |
The g-a-y bit didn't make any sense, quite homophobic, in fact.
And Christopher Lambert can go to hell. He sucks. _________________ I'm gonna marry Quan Chi some day...
