While chatting to my crew in the local bar a few nights ago, we got onto the topic of MK. One of my friends asked me "Why is Kang and some dude on fire visible in the background on The Pit II?" ...and he stumped me. I have absolutely no idea what the hell the deal is with that. Can anybody clear this up for me?

Basically, according to Wikipedia, those two characters, who are apparently palette swaps of Liu Kang, are Torch(fire guy, who is actually Blaze) and Hornbuckle. Not much else I kan say about these two background kharacters.

So it's Blaze and Liu? Why are they there? Was there any mention of Blaze back in those days, or are they just claiming it's him now?

No idea why they're there. Just background kharacters I suppose. Like the mass of monks watching you fight in the first MK.

The monks are kinda different though, because they don't play a big part in the MK story line. Blaze and Kang, on the other hand, really do.

Hmmm, I see. But if the fans referred to him has Horbuckle, and Boon referred to him as Liu Kang, where does that leave us? And it still doesn't explain why he would be fighting Blaze.
...I think I'm more confused now than before.

He referred to him as Liu Kang because it was the Liu Kang sprite used. I guess it was supposed to just make the Pit more atmospheric.
OR
Maybe its the Great Kung Lao! lol Nah.

Nah im pretty sure the MK fans nicknamed him blaze because....he was on fire lol Then he was made into a solid kharacter in Deadly Alliance. Sort've like how Ermac and Rain kame about........fan speculation.
I wouldn't mind seeing Hornbuckle actually lol Anyones better than Kobra.

Aw, yes, definitely better than Kobra. Plus Hornbucklee sounds so much cooler. Also, I thought the fan-name for Blaze was Torch, according to the MK Wikia page.

Ok, fair enough. The fans nicknamed him, and later in the series he was brought to ife as an actual character. But this still doesn't explain why he was there in the first place, or who he was originally supposed to be.
