Im kompletely 100% behind bloodyshadow. This isn't MK.
Kompletely retconning the kharacters is fucked up.
But yeah it was a pitch by Kevin Tancharoen to WB with the possibility of selling it to them if they liked it. R.I.P. Cageon the side of the building, Changing Jax's name to Jacks, Scorpion actually getting kalled Hanzo and not being Japanese, he had a inspector gadget toy intead of a roped kunai, Subs looked like something from Resistance Fall of Man. Too much man, what happened to the MK i loved. Sorry dudes and I respect every MK fan's opinion but as a diehard MK fan myself I say "Its official......it sucked!"
bloodyshadow represent! ^-^
I wana know what TMK has to say about it.
Probably videoing his thoughts as we speak. With it or against it dude.....?

Its got me interested and I'm with you ChibiHana on this. It took me completely by suprise I quite enjoyed it and I liked Jeri Ryan as Sonya Blade. The films don't follow the games exactly anyway I would rather see the games keep to their more fantasy origin but the films should be different.
As a die hard fan I want to see more. _________________ His approach will be as silent as new fallen snow...his attack as fierce as winter's blizzard...his devastation as brutal as winter's relentless chill...he is complete (Lin Kuei Grandmaster)

It won't be a retcon though. A reton is retroactive additions to an already existing story. This would be a re-imagining a new story all together that is just using the well known premises of the series. It will be seperate and would most likely only exsist in its own movie series.
Anyone find it ironic that one of the biggest MK news in months comes out and TMK is packing his bags for E3? Lol. _________________ Yippie Ki Yay

Wow, I wasn't sure what to expect when the thing started, and when they named the guy "Reptile" at first I thought "this is kinda dumb". But as it progressed and I realized the angle of the video, overall I thought it was completely awesome. Watching it a second time it was even better.
I never would have imagined Jerry Ryan as Sonya Blade, but given the fact in this version she's just a normal detective (by the looks of it) that's not so bad. As long as she doesn't fight or anything it'd be cool.
I really, really hope Warner Bros. adopts the idea and we finally get a new Mortal Kombat movie. It may not be the one we've waited 12 odd years for, but I think doing it this way will re-invigorate the franchise and give it a new spin. Not saying future games have to follow this root but the movie itself will bring more attention to the franchise which is what it really needs.
I completely back this re-imaged Mortal Kombat and hope to see it come out down the road as a movie. It may not be what I'm used to, and I still love the original lore, but I welcome this all the same, especially if it's handled well and helps to re-invigorate the gaming franchise.
Long live Mortal Kombat! _________________

Pretty cool with all these different opinions. I have to say that having this as a spinoff Mortal Kombat, set more as a modern day, slightly more realistic version of Mortal Kombat would be awesome.

From what I have gathered (after WAAAY too much research,) the combined facts all point to a Hollywood pitch and this is not a movie as of right now. Only and idea. People seem to be beside it so heaviliy that it may actually get picked up (though, I am not pleased.)
You're very right about only seeing a small amount and it's fair to discredit an instant hatred for something with only a small viewing time. However, the mysticism is, most likely going to be minimal at best. The fact that they have already taken two of the most prominately mystic creatures out of it and turned them into humans already bodes poorly for a fantasy angle. It's going for more of a realistic turn (I blame "The Dark Knight" for this fad even though I loved it) which could really hurt the franchise for it's hardcore fans.
Also from what I have found, is that the premise was mainly a focal point on Baraka and Reptile. While others get their nods and there are strong points to Scorpion finding Sub-Zero, the main attraction was SUPPOSED to be held on the story of how Baraka and Reptile came to be how they are. Knowing all that further negates any chance of a mystical element as, stated before, these two prominately mythical beasts are now just... some guys.
EDIT -
Didn't realize the fact that this was a pitch had already been posted. Only saw Chibi's reply for some reason. _________________

Ilike the gritty, dark tone of it but I hate everything else. Like bloodyshadow said MK is now a Kop show. No thanx. Keep the style but be faithfull to the kharacters.

We've seen each others thoughts on this, but what about TMK's? We should hear his thoughts on this.

Actually bloodyshadow, the guy who made this has said if he's able to do an actual movie he intends to include the more mystical elements but he wants to handle it carefully. He doesn't just want super-powers galore. Here's an interview with Director Kevin Tancharoen:
http://www.collider.com/2010/06/09/kevin-tancharoen-interview-mortal-kombat-rebirth-feature-film/
Reading this interview should alleviate some of your worries about the mysticism being removed. Also by the sounds of it and given all the little details (such as Scorpion's real name) seen in this short video, you can tell this director is a hardcore MK fan and will be sure to handle it in a way that respects the series still. _________________

I really dislike this. From the opening seen when it was revealed that Jax was a detective, I thought "Right, I start the wrong counter, and see how many things are wrong in the next seven minutes). My wrong counter soon exploded...
This is not a Mortal Kombat video. It's simply a video in which with MK characters are named. It seems like a case of getting the rights, doing whatever you want with them, and not giving a good goddamn about how true it is to it's original media.
I, like the the rest of us MK heads, have been waiting an eternity for a new MK flick, and that's what I expect to see. Not some half-assed "re-imagining", but an actual MK flick. Untill I get this, I'll accept no subsitutes!
Having said all that though, the Cage/ Baraka fight scene is excellently done. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

Just finished reading that interview (Amphibious posted it a few posts above you, dude), and it's an interesting read. Seems like homeboy know the ins and outs of MK, and is actually a big fan of the games. I'm not too sure about what he was saying about the magic side of things though. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

A hardcore fan of MK behind an official MK film. This seems to be very promising, should everything come together.
