Whether it's a remake or a sequel, the most important thing to worry about is the gameplay. So long as it plays well, that should take priority first.

The press release's terminology really makes it come across as a retelling of the story. Unfortunately, that means we STILL won't get any answers about what happend after Armageddon... which kinda sucks, but I;m not gonna let that ruin this game for me. It looks too great for that. For those of you out there who either haven't seen, can't find, or can't view the press release, I'll post it right here:
Burbank, Calif. – June 10, 2010 – Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment announces Mortal Kombat, the
most brutal installment of the landmark fighting game to date for release on the PlayStation®3 computer
entertainment system and Xbox 360® video game and entertainment system from Microsoft in 2011. Mortal
Kombat is being developed by the newly re-named NetherRealm Studios, led by Mortal Kombat creator and
creative director Ed Boon.
The newest chapter of the iconic fight franchise marks a triumphant return to the series’ mature presentation and
a reinvention of its classic 2D fighting mechanic. Driven by an all new graphics engine, the fan favorite Fatality
is back and presented in more gory detail than ever before. In addition, Mortal Kombat introduces a number of
new game-play features including tag team and the deepest story mode of any fighting game. Players can
choose from an extensive lineup of the game’s iconic warriors and challenge their friends in traditional 1 vs. 1
matches, or take on several new game modes.
“We are bringing the Mortal Kombat franchise back to gamers with the talented NetherRealm Studios team
creating the game fans long to play,” said Martin Tremblay, President, Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment.
“Re-establishing the brand with Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, Mortal Kombat innovates on past
games while staying true to the brand’s legendary characters and fighting style.”
“We can’t wait for players to get their hands on Mortal Kombat,” said Ed Boon, Creative Director,
NetherRealm Studios. “This game really is a response to what players have been demanding: mature
presentation, reinvented 2D fighting mechanic and the best, most gruesome fatalities ever!”
Mortal Kombat introduces a number of new game modes as well as the most extensive online experience ever
seen in a fighting game. Up to 4 players can battle “tag-team”- 2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade
Mode” or compete against another team online. _________________

It is rather vague though "staying true to the brand’s legendary characters" does make it sound like there will be a large classic roster, however with some of the characters shown in the trailer I'm still tempted to say its after Armageddon. I just hope there's a good storyline gameplay isn't very important to me. _________________ His approach will be as silent as new fallen snow...his attack as fierce as winter's blizzard...his devastation as brutal as winter's relentless chill...he is complete (Lin Kuei Grandmaster)

In the depths of Winter I finally learned that within me there lay an invinsible summer (Albert Camus)

I'm loving the parts where it says it'll have the "deepest story mode of any fighting game" and that "2 players can team up in the new “Co-op Arcade Mode”. The tag-team mode is going to be awesome and by the sounds of it the story mode should be pretty detailed. Given the fact we've seen characters like Kira in the background it's possible this is a sequel and we'll find out what happened after MK: Armageddon in the story mode. Even if that's not the case, I'm still looking forward to everything MK9 has to offer in terms of game play. _________________

Hmm, if it is a remake of the oldies, then this could be Boon's boldest move yet. On one side, it's a great idea- rope a bunch of new kids in by showing them how it all began, and getting them hooked on the story. On the other side of the argument, it's carreer suicide- take all the MK fans that you've gathered over the course of almost two decades, give the a huge cliffhanger in which the entire fate of the realms hangs in the balance, and then release two games in a row which have nothing to do with the story. If this is the case, Boon's hanging a lot on his good natured fans to wait around... _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

I couldn't agree more. I kinda just want Ed Boon to give a press release kust saying "They all died at the end." Then they could do anything they wabt. I just want official closure. Than, they can remake whatever. _________________

Agreed, it doesn't have to be a new game, just some form of ending to give us piece of mind. Alternatively, an animated movie would be a fantastic way to wrap it all. With all the hype that's hit the MK world and the legend of the Street Fighter II Animated Movie in mind, I think an animated Kombat movie would be a fantastic way to let us know what happened to all the characters that we grew up with in the arcades. Also, with WB on board now, I'm sure it wouldn't be too much of a stretch. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

Thank you man iv been wanting a Mortal Kombat anime for fucking years!
The Street Fighjter II anime was Outstanding. Awesome music, awesome fights, awesome dialogue such as the classic line from Guile to Bison " Bison! I'll rip your fucking heart out you filthy bastard!" lmao. If MK was to get animated properly it has to be anime. And an Afro Samurai violence filled anime at that!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AKMFcZ4HzgY&feature=related
Thats the kut-down and censored version. More dialogue etc is missing. Like when the guy tells his men to attack he doesn't make a funny series of noises but yells something along the lines of "Kill this Mother Fucker!". Havn't watched it in a while.
All the best,

Afro Samurai was pretty awesome. Same with Ressurection. Both incredibly violent. I love how for the manga adaptation, it adds in red for the blood, rather than leaving it black like in other manga.

Him getting the medallion froze his arms with his increased power and became part of the canon because of it.)
(THIS IMPLIES THAT THIS IS EITHER A REMAKE OR A SEQUEL AS HE MAY HAVE LOST THE MEDALLION SOMEHOW.)
3 - Whether or not it is a random character generator for fun, the fact that Daegon appears in the background implies that he is awake from his slumber. This means that it is AFTER Armageddon.
(THIS IMPLIES THAT IT IS A SEQUEL.) |
nó daegon was awake for a long long time
he even created the red dragon clan
which can implie it is a prequel or a remake

I'm pretty sure it was revealed this game is a remake of MKI-III, though I heard it might not go all the way through three. Look like a reboot. _________________ Those were $500 sunglasses, asshole.

You might be onto something there with that Afro Samurai idea, Razer. I've never seen the flicks, but from what I watched in that clip, I reckon it would suit MK's dark world very well.
Anyways, back on topic- I really wanna know more about this "most in depth story mode" situation. Are we going to be spoonfed characters through-out this mode again like we were in MK Vs DCU? Or are we going to get an in depth look at each and every character as we choose them for Kombat? _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!
