So although here at TMK we are all big Kombat fans, we know that the truth is SF has dominated the fighting game world for the last decade or more. I'm not saying SF is better than MK or any shit like that, I'm just saying that it's much more widely played.
When MK came out first it was huge. Everybody everywhere, from that posh kid down the street, to the cab driver with no name, they all knew what MOrtal Kombat was, and what ensued when the word "Finish Him" were heard at the end of the fight. Nowadays though, nine outta every ten kids ain't got a clue what MK is, simply because it disappeared into the shadows of the fighting game genre, and only the old fans (and a few others, of course) knew it was still around, or that it had ever even exsisted for that matter.
This is one of the reason I love being a Kombat fan. A true rebel in the face of gaming. MK has a cult following these days, and not much more. But, unlike fans of many other games, MK fans would follow the franchise to the ends of the earth, and truely believe in it. Hell, I even gave my right arm for MK, in a sense of speaking. In this light Kombat reminds me of heavy metal. Metalheads have the same attitude towards their favourite style of music, as Kombat heads towards MK. But both are in the sadows of bigger, and better known games/ music. That's half the fun of it though! Being that guy who craics the "Finsih Him" joke when their friend is downing a shot of whiskey, or being that guy who puts people back in their place when they same "Mortal Kombat? Nobody plays that any more". It's almost like a small rebellion.
Basically, before I rant on and on, what I'm asking here is: Does anyone else feel that slight sense of glory, and standing out from the crowd by being a Kombat head? Does anyone take a little pleasure in the fact that MK fans are now few are far between. Anybody enjoy being the one who spits back in modern gamings face for what you believe in?
And more importantly, is this all about to change?
Now don't get me wrong, I want the new MK to come out swinging and put SSFIV back in it's box just the way it's predesscors did back in 92. But will this take a lot of the fun out of being a Kombat fan. If suddenly everyone everywhere is hugely aware of MK, and is back on the band wagon, how will you feel? Sure it'll be great for the franchise itself, but what kind of effect will it have one the old timers like us?
"And slowly from the ashes, a pheonix will arise...!"
EDIT: Shit! Got carried away with that rant, didn't I? _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

I have a double whammy I'm a female MK fan most people can't get their heads around women playing games nevermind liking MK which they consider too violent for women Considering that the most bloodthirtsy Saw and Hostel fans I know are all women that one puzzles me. So just playing games makes me stand out without adding MK to the mix going from the reactions of the guys in my Kung Fu class. Lol telling people I do Kung Fu and Tai Chi, like MK, learn foreign languages and study another degree in my spare time tends to intimidate people
Actually are there many MK female fans out there? I only meet male ones and the forums are dominated by the guys.
I also love symphonic metal which most people can't get their heads around including metal and classical fans _________________ His approach will be as silent as new fallen snow...his attack as fierce as winter's blizzard...his devastation as brutal as winter's relentless chill...he is complete (Lin Kuei Grandmaster)

While I'm not the biggest MK fan, I tend to be split when it comes to different games of a frachise, most of the time. For fighting games, I like MK for the simple special moves, semi-simple combos, and of course the killing, while for Street Fighter, I enjoy the semi-fast paced action, as well as the super combo moves. As for female fans of MK, my sister enjoys MK. Sure, she doesn't play them a whole lot, but she enjoys the violence in them.

Hmmm, I get enough strange looks when I say I'm a Kombat fan, never mind if I was a women too. I'd defo say you get strange reactions, icewinddale. To be honest, I thought you were a guy, but then again it's pretty impossible to tell what gender a person is through an online forum. As for other female Kombat heads, I know one of the mods here at TMK is a woman. Aslo, I knew one or two others on other old MK forums over the years. Don't know any personally though.
I got especially strange reactions a few weeks ago for being a MK-er. I was up at a Street Fighter tournament (I play a lot of Street Fighter, alway have done), and when I mentioned my MK obsession, it didn't go down great with the SF fans, lol. Nice bunch of guys though, it was all good craic. _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

I've only ever known five other women on this forum but I've probably missed some over the years especially during MKvsDC as I wasn't on here much.
My sisters still enjoy MK trilogy and MK4 and challenge each other on a regular basis. They did it yesterday _________________ His approach will be as silent as new fallen snow...his attack as fierce as winter's blizzard...his devastation as brutal as winter's relentless chill...he is complete (Lin Kuei Grandmaster)

Yeah man I know exactly what you are talking about. I too feel proud to ba a Kombat fan! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Ge-8Dy9E-TE
All my friends know who the local MK King is ^-^
If any of them get asked "Whos the biggest MK fan you know?" They all think of me lol and thats hit gets me pumping.
Brought MK 2 and 3 to a party a little while ago and everyone had great craic playing it. Everyone was hoping I lost! lmao! But I stood strong all night finally losing a match to my friend who plays MK all the time with me so he knows my strategies. Drunk as fuck! Awesome times.

Awesome tales razer! It's always a blast when it's a fight to take down the longstanding winner in a game.

Yeah, it be's similar whenever there is a house party in mine too. People want the MKI cab fired up, just in the hope that I'll lose a match. I do have an unfair advantage though- They are usually drunk as fuck, and I don't drink, lol.
I do love being that one guy though. That one guy who says ""Fuck playing Call Of Duty. Break out the Kombat!" I often get phonecalls in the middle of the night from my friends asking me for info about this or that from MK because they met some dude in a nightclub who reckons he's right
But, as stated before, will this new game being a huge hit suck all the fun outta these kinda situations? If everybody is suddenly a part of the Kombat Army, will it be as much fun? _________________ Brutal honesty will be shown on this screen!

I will say this. When I was younger, I remember myself trying out Street Fighter, but not enjoying it. My first MK game was when I was about age 8 or 9 on the very first MK. It has been and always will be a favorite game of mine. All my friends and family know me as the MK fan, and some of them can't stand just how much of the storyline, bios and characters I know by heart. As the familiar saying goes, once an MK fan, always an MK fan! I'm proud to be an MK fan. Anyone who tries to change me will always be unsuccessful. Some news, I'd thought I'd share with you all: I'm working on two different things right now. I wanna get my fan fic story published, and sell the MK guys a character, well perhaps for a later game. The reason for selling them a new character came to me when I saw they had introduced a member of the Lin Kuei in MK:DA, and I thought if they could introduce a fellow Lin Kuei warrior, why can't that be the same for the Shyrai-Ryu? A friend of mine and some of his friends are helping me, and if anyone would like to, you may help me with my development. Any and all help would be greatly appreciated. _________________ Highest Kreate-A-Fatality: 11 (Ultimate Fatality)

I'm a well established MK fan in my local gaming community so I don't get so much of a funny look for being a fan but rather left to my own devices since SF is the bigger game currently with SF4 taking off. Hopefully though MK9 will rule and all can be put back on track in terms of gaming others. _________________ Yippie Ki Yay
