We know that spin-offs and remakes of previous games don't accumulate on the count up, since MK4 wasn't called MK6 despite being released after UMK3 and MKT. Also, in order to distinguish this game from MK1, placing a number in the name based on the canonical game progression works.

Quitoe for truth, this sums up the conversation, we can keep arguing for all of our days, but well, I found out something: Ed Boon said on his twitter before It Is MK9, and on his avatar It says MK9, so thats kimda change sthings a bit.

Thats what i have been saying about it you can call it what you like until the game comes out and they slap what they want on it. Some people will just argue about it and never be happy but at the end of the day its something so minor. Its Mk whatever Ed and the team puts on it and dont matter if we like it or not.

We shouldn't let the title mess around with us. Remember the whole mess with Street Fighter 2? That game made so many name changes with all its updates. We're getting so worked up about the title, when it's the gameplay that matters more.

In a sense, that's true. MK vs DC didn't have bad gameplay... but it DID take out all the kool stuff that made MK great. Gameplay does matter, that of which you are very correct, but certain elements of the game also matter. Taking out a mass majority of the blood, and severely weakening or even censoring fatalities just takes away from it having a number... Hell, it takes away from it even being named "Mortal Kombat".

Shaolin Monks WAS a good game IMO. It had the blood, it had the fatalities, it even had a 2 player VS. mode, so it was a fairly decent game. It tried to follow the MKII storyline, and it wasn't 100% perfect, so it's not canon. It at least tried, but even making it follow the canon storyline, it would still just be a simple spin-off. A spin-off it is.

Yea one of my favorite things about the game was just it being in that MK2 period of Mortal Kombat after playing Deadly alliance and Deception, it was a good reminder of the older games

I totally agree.
It paid tribute to what many believe to be the greatest MK game of all time.
