Well, there isn't a lot of new stuff, but he does talk about Mavado a bit more (man he sounds cool!!!) and describes Cyrax's fatality. Here's the address if you're curious:

oh, that whole line is the whole address. I don't know why it only underlined part of it. Perhaps it still works, I dunno. If the link doesn't work then just type the whole thing in.

There's been a large amount of hype surrounding Mortal Kombat Deadly Alliance - why should gamers be getting excited?

Boon: There's a lot to get excited about. We have a totally redesigned fighting system, true 3D movement, kool weapons, lots of characters and backgrounds to unlock, 676 different koffins to unlock, two-player betting, a deep single-player mode, an Arcade mode that reveals character story endings, and a bunch of other stuff like DVD content, etc.

How do you feel the game has evolved from the original MK and do you feel Deadly Alliance still remains true to the spirit of the series?

Boon: We totally feel like game retains the spirit of the series, especially the original. This new version is all about the one-on-one, cat and mouse style of fighting, which is what the original was too. I think a testament to the quality of the game is our testing group. They've been literally playing this game over and over for months, which usually burns people out. These guys are still excited and like playing the game, which is great to see.

You're making a big deal about the new fighting system, with each character possessing three distinct styles - can you explain how this operates?

Boon: Each fighter has two hand-to-hand fighting styles, and one that's weapon-based. For example, Scorpion's hand-to-hand ones are: Hapkido and Pi Gua, and Ninja Sword for the weapon. As players fight they can switch between any of these three instantly, depending on how they want to fight (i.e. more offensive, more defensive, etc.). The really good players can actually switch fighting styles during a long single combo attack. By learning different combos and figuring out which ones work better on different fighters there are literally hundreds of ways to fight.

The other interesting thing about the fighting system is that it's based on real martial arts. We take some creative liberties within the styles to make sure the game is fun and fast-paced, but at the core are these real fighting styles and weapons.

The series became famous for its wonderful brutality - in particular the awesome fatalities. Can you give us some examples of this feature in Deadly Alliance?

Boon: Let's just say they all involve body parts and usually large quantities of blood! Sub-Zero will walk up to his victim and literally rip out the loser's spine (as the body falls like a ragdoll). Scorpion uses his trademark spear for removing a loser's head. Cyrax's mechanical arm takes the loser and slams him to the ground three times, then actually sucks the body into his chest. As you hear grinding noises Cyrax gets in a victory pose, then he spits out body parts from his chest like a bloody garbage disposal!

MK fans will have their favourite characters that they've stuck by over the course of the series - now you've completely rewritten the fighting system, will the likes of Scorpion still feel familiar to fans?

Boon: Definitely. He has the trademark "Get over here!" spear, along with some other familiar moves.

Can you tell us about the new characters you've included in the game?

Boon: Mavado is a kool new character. He has these grappling hooks that get planted in the ground to help him move around and attack. One move lets him bungee back in the air and sling shot feet first into the opponent, another lets him plant one hook and spin quickly to either side.

Bo' Rai Cho is another interesting new character. He's rather, how should I say, "rotund" with a big wine sack on his back. Although he's large and staggers around in a drunken-like state, he's actually very agile and powerful. One of his special moves is to puke. Although comical, it's really useful since if done correctly the opponent will slip/back pedal in the puke, which leaves him open for a combo attack. There are lots of other kool characters, but I don't want to give too much away [laughs]!

How would you view Deadly Alliance in relation to the competition, such as Virtua Fighter, Soul Calibur, Tekken and so on?

Boon: We think it will do very well. Our three fighting styles give a level of depth not present in these games. Other things like our Konquest mode are very deep too, and will take most players dozens of hours to complete. Each of the fighters also has special moves (like Scorpion's spear or Mavado's grappling hooks) that other games don't.

We're also excited about our particle effects. Multiple layers of facial damage create an added level of realism, and cool background effects, and of course blood are things we do that the others don't. There's also a good balance of both hand-to-hand fighting and weapons fighting, and we're the only game that does both (since Virtua Fighter and Tekken don't have weapons, and Soul Calibur doesn't have hand-to-hand fighting).

Another big feature none of the others have is gambling. Throughout the game in Konquest and Arcade mode you earn "koins" for winning. These koins are saved to a player's profile on their memory card (or hard drive if on an Xbox). The kool thing is two players can load up their profiles, trash talk each other, then "put their money where their mouth is" and wager the earned koins in head-to-head fights in Arcade mode. These koins then get used in The Krypt, which is an enormous room filled with 676 koffins. Players then "buy" koffins and get anything from new fighters and backgrounds to sketches and pictures of the development team or a bunch of other stuff.

One of the great things about previous versions is that the violence has been offset by quirky humour such as Friendships and Babalities - does anything like this make it into Deadly Alliance?

Boon: We have some humour in the game, like Bo'Rai Cho's puke (and another funny thing which I can't talk about now), but not Friendships and Babalities. We wanted the focus to be on the fighting and kombat, so we didn't put these elements in the game.

Likewise, Mortal Kombat has always been crammed with tonnes of hidden extras and secrets - can we expect a similar amount of goodies in Deadly Alliance, and can you give us any hints as to the sort of things players can find?

Boon: We've continued the extra stuff with this version too. The game starts off with a good mix of 12 characters and ten backgrounds to select from. As players earn koins and unlock the best koffins they'll get access to an additional nine characters and seven more backgrounds. On top of this each of the 21 characters will also have their own alternate version (example: Jax with different, non-metal arms) that's hidden in the Krypt. After a player finishes all 218 missions in the Konquest mode they'll get a surprise item with another one hidden in the Krypt which can then be used...

Finally, how would you recommend Mortal Kombat: Deadly Alliance over other 3D fighters?

Boon: Depth, variety, intense two-player fighting and gambling, kool fatalities and the gameplay (much of this stuff has been mentioned above). At the end of the day it all boils down to how much fun it is, and this game is fun.
