I recieved this magazine in my mail today, and I'm a bit ticked off at some of the shit they spew because for the most part, it's fucking downright FALSE.
First off, here's what Shane said...
"It's a shame, really. Alliance is an ambitious attempt at turning this franchise around but underneath it's sleek new veneer, you'll find the
same problematic gameplay that has plagued the series' recent
incarnations. The multiple styles seem cool at first but it's too bad
that these styles are horribly unbalanced and all rely on a handful
of special moves and unintuitive, dialed-in combos. In it's defense,
the game offers tons of unlockable secrets, and surprizingly attractive
backgrounds (no praise for the laughably janky animations, though --
Johnny Cage's bicycle kick looks 100% stupid). It'll be acceptable
to current MK fans, but won't win any new ones." --SCORE 5.0--
First off, there aren't any "handfuls" of special moves - 90% of the fighters in this game only have 2-3 special "classic MK" style moves. If those moves didn't translate well into the 3D engine (like teleports, turning invisible, morphing, bullet kicks, etc.) that were complete NIXXED and replaced with NEW moves.
Secondly - and you can ask EbonyGentleman, and Shiva for more clarification as they're playing this game, too - Johnny cage DOES NOT have a fucking "bicycle kick" at ALL. I don't where the hell he pulled that shit from. Another thing is I don't where he got janky animations from. The animation in MK:DA is done fairly well.
Now, on Che's comments...
"Since the MK franchise seemed dead and buried, I approached this game with a mixture of apprehension and perverse interest. For me, the series peaked with MK2, but I respected the game's attempt at pushing the genre (at the time) with a deep skill-based system. Of course, that was years ago and it doesn't take some sort of video black belt to see that the fighting genre has evolved way beyond those days of yore, leaving MK to pitifully behind to play catch-up. That's basically what Alliance feels like: a declaration that Sub-Zero and his posse are back, ready to kick ass again in the 21 century. Well, old sport, I need more than that. Strip away the surprizingly excellent graphics and gimmicky bonus material and you've got a 3D fighter that's derivative at best, and at worst, the same game we got tired of years ago. The ability to switch...styles on the fly is cool, but there are ton of moves that can easily be abused, flushing both honor and skill down the toilet. Then there are the dreaded Tekken-esque multi-string combos that are less about reflexes and more about hard memorization. I know that for a lot of nostalgic gamers, the selling point here isn't the depth of gameplay, but rather the outrageous fatalities, nonchalant gore, and truck loads of hidden secrets. Those fans will be appeased, but I'm barely impressed." --SCORE 5.0--
Now, I'm sure some will agree about Che's comments on abuse he acts like this game is just a rehash of the same gameplay mechanics as past MK titles and that just outright foolish. And let me tell you - MK:DA isn't the only fighting game on the market where there's tons of abuse going on that skill and honor are flushed. DOA is pretty much a reversal-throw fest with jiggly tits - very little else. And MK:DA's moves and combos aren't hard to remember and YOU DON'T HAVE TO USE THEM - there just CANNED combos - and every fighting game has them. Chances are if you play MK:DA for any good length of time, you won't find yourself hitting the PAUSE menu to look at a "War & Peace" laundry list of overly complicated moves every 15 seconds (unlike Tekken and VF4).
Lastly on to Milkman's review...
"I never expected MK:DA to be the best fighting game ever made -- I just wanted it to be a GOOD MK game. And it is. I'd go so far as to say that it is DAMN good. Why? Because it's just a hell of lot of fun. Sure, MK:DA is Steven Segal to VF4's Bruce Lee: Less talented, less finessed, less handsome, but still able to kick butts. All of the classic MK fighters have been gorgeously reinvented for maximum cool factor and the number of unlockable bonuses could have fans playing for eons. The best part (and the thing that makes MK:DA the best MK game since MK2) is that it isn't an over-the-top schlockfest like the last few installments. Toasty!" --SCORE 8.5--
Milkman is pretty damn fair and his review is right in line with my own as well as all the other magazines and websites out there. He doesn't pretend something is true when it isn't, like the other two. I think perhaps some of us have been a little too spoiled by the uber-tech leetness of the deeper fighters and think that they should be the end-all-be-all measuring stick. The brutal truth is if MK:DA had contained all the little intracasies like "super leet crab crawl wakashashi kick cancels" and the
"supercalifragelisticexpealidocious power squat, one-armed handstand, cross-ups", it would've been SLAMMED for "following the leader" - for being a "VF/DOA wannabe".
But since MKDA doesn't have that...it's suddenly an "entry level fighter"?!?
I'm calling Che and Shane on the carpet, especially for this dreck. In fact, I'm going to call Midway and ask for small request - just for 2 simple MK Dragon logo stickers. I'm going to place them stickers on some shiny new coffee mugs, toss in 2 pairs of sunglasses and then send it out to Che and Shane because anyone in journalism that writes outlandish garbage such at this shouldn't be in journalism.
They should be out on the streets selling pencils.

I totally agree with you about che and the other reviewer who were convinved that MK DA was a sorry excuse for a fighter and a bad looking one. Maybe they were taqlking bout the original beta version with only 4 colors while milkman got the finished product. However they were right about the cheap tactics, and tired combos, but all fighting games have them even the god of fighters, VF4 (thats just my opinion). I mean Akira and Dural become just as retardly cheap as Quan Ji and Shang Tsung and I am sure the same thing happens in Tekken (Not in DOA though, that game is nothing when compared to MK DA). Which reminds me, I beleive that MK DA has some of the most awsome looking combos I have ever seen (Yes even better then VF4 which I consider to be the God of fighters). I Love Mavados combo that ends with him driving the opponents face to the ground with the hook swords.
p.s. I have lost a lot of respect and love for the EGM editors. Dont get me wrong, I knew the game wasnt going to get and EGM platinum but it at least should have gotten a silver. DOS 2 got a silver or gold and tht game nothing bout revealing outfits and bouncing breasts with a little fighitng here and there. And in my opinion, I feel that the mortal Kombat Franchise had made a complete turn around. They went from a game that was all about special moves and fetalities to a game that is now more about fighting. _________________ DO I want to kill you? No . . . . But will i? . . . . why not?

I would have 2 agree w/ Che's comment... the only things I'd change about it is "but I'm barely impressed." and the score... I'm very impressed w/ MK:DA, I luv this game more than MK2 and MKT... and I'd give it a score of 8.7 at the highest... Good job Boon!!! _________________ I throw my two cents in when its needed...

Hey, Cage, I just posted an altered version of my previous rant over there. I really hammered on them. They deserved it!

Good job, dude! If we let them know how pissed we are, maybe they'll do a better job reviewing in the future. _________________ Those were $500 sunglasses, asshole.
