OK first we gotta realize this is a fighting game, not an RPG...when they develop these kind of games, they first make the fighting engine, the characters, and in the very end.....when all else is done....they write their storylines and create it's mythos. Story is the last part they think of. Lets keep that in mind...
I can't remember all the character's storylines from the past games, but the ones I remember that were pretty lame are the following:
Jax: It's either you or Sonya...one of you have got to go, sorry Jax.
Shang Tsung: Ancient wizard who seems to be getting younger in every game and doesnt deserve "Last Boss" status anymore.
Ermac, Rain, Mileena, Noob Saibot, Mokap, Reptile, Smoke, and any other misplaced fighters with mysterious pasts aka put in the game as secret characters to increase replay value.
As for Scorpion, I agree his story is repetitive, and his character is a rip off of Ghost Rider (Spirit of Vengeance, Flaming Skull, Hell-Spawn Demon). I like his persistent attitude, unrelenting drive, and hell-spawn powers, but he needs a new direction, and a new cause.
Cyborgs: Cyrax, Smoke, Sektor...ugh..One was and IS enough. Product of a mysterious organization created for killing, Just like the Terminator and the Character in Killer Instinct, Fulgore. C'mon, one killing machine at a time now...Cyrax is enough.
Theres more to say, but whats the point, the whole story and mythos gets more bland as we look further into it.

Yes,one machine is enough.Sektor must be that machine.Cyrax never needed to be created.I feel he was just put there for Scorpion fans since Scorp didn't made it in MK3.In my opinion,Sektor and Smoke should have been the only cyborgs.In MK Gold,Smoke should have been there as the one who become human again.
As for Scorpion,well i still say bring back classic Sub-zero!He was unjustly killed,so he deserves revenge!He escapes the netherealm and go after Scorpion.The hunter become the hunted!Now that would be a nice change.
About Sonya,well i did like her in MK1 and 3.She was tough but feminine at the same time.In the comics,Sonya was just plain cool.I liked the long hair and head band.In MK3,she was even better.But in MK4 and DA,they made her like her movie counterparts.Her story got stale.She didn't look tougher,but weaker.Bring back the original Sonya!The one from MK1/3,with the skimpy outfit,the long hair and the head band.Make her look like Kerri Hoskins.Sonya would be cool again.

The MKDA Sonya is really nice. I don't mind about Jax.
