No, I guess your friend underestimated you and attacked with no caution at all. He showed all of his skills in offense, but totally had forgotten about some strategy and defense. A no-no, for a good fighter.
When I fight computer AI, we sometimes walk around each other for like 30 seconds with no action at all, waiting for one of us to make the first miss. We try some short, light attacks but they get blocked by me as well as by the AI. It is usually the fighter who first misses a strong attack that ends up loosing. The same approach should be taken while against human opponent. A lot of caution and strategy. Though purely defensive tactics are not too good either. I mean, your friend has to do all the job, and you just use his misses to hit him in his weak moment.
Sidesteping is a bit painfull in MK. If you miss to deliver the first hit in your long combo and AI sidesteps, you end up punching the air and the opponent standing by your side ready to exploit your defenseless position. That is why, short combos and even single hits are very usefull too. You kind of try to catch the opponenent to deliver that long devastating one.

heh It took me ages, but i did it.
I went through all the characters rather easily, but i was trying to beat the game with Frost on Quan Chi, i couldnt do it no matter what i tried, so i had to finish the game with scorpion. It took me 1 hour and a half. Quan Chi is soooooo cheap on MAX Difficulty.

Scorpion is probably the easiest guy to complete the game with. I'd say Johnny Cage would be a pretty good second choice to attempt it with also.

I tried it with Scorpion, later with Sonya. But like I said....I got sick of it.

I've passed it with most charactors on MAX but I've found Shangthe easiest by far.

don't forget... the AI was made by a human...so technicly, ur fighting another human guy, so he or she can be beaten, u just have to know their weaknesses and exploit them...

Well, not exactly. Computer can generate signals a lot faster and more efficiently than your hands. That is, that there is a difficulty level, where CPU is just way too fast. Can you beat this AI? Not in normal combat, only if you find some cheap way. Besides, some AI´s even cheat, that is they a-priori have some advantage to create the extreme difficulty level. So, yes, the AI is made by a human, but it doesn´t mean that AI plays like a human.

yeah but, because its made by a human, it has faults and flaws...... i have a perfect way of beaten them on max...... just use the side stepping stuff.....don't always be on the offensive..... defend...you'll find it alot easier.....block then immeadetly start a combo...it all works if u get the timing right....

What?MK game AI is cheap?Surely you jest 
Anyway I dont think I've bothered playing past the medium difficulty.Cheap as hell,but nowhere as aggravating as the MK3 AI.Even on the easiest diffuculty I could barely get past the 4th or 5th character.Damn I suck Then again I havent played either game in forever,i'm probably worse now

Woot! I made it!!
I tried MAX difficulity with Sonya and it only took me 20 Minutes!! I needed 3 tries to beat Moloch but I won every other fight at the first try. Quan Chi isn't that hard at all.

wow MAX is impossible........ i can make it up 2 shang tsung in hard but ive only passed it twice, yet ive never won a match in MAX
