They were lame on purpose. After MK3, Midway realised that the Animalities were a little silly, so they made em VERY silly.

Why was Reptile's a monkey? And all he did was chase them off the screen. he could have like threw a Exploding bannana at the opponent. That would have been awesome.

Like Ed Boon said before... "these Animalities were just for comedic purposes..."
It was one of those things where he said that he wants to defy all that we do in everyday life... and thats where the animalities came from.
