In all seriousness. I think what made it so damn popular is because before the ratings system, people were getting so upset.
You know the saying any news is good news? Well I think this is the case, parents, teachers, news reporters, Sen. Lieberman, Tipper Gore, were so obsessed with this game that it boosted is popularity. Sure us fan boys have our reasons beyond that, but I think that is what made it from another money cruncher to a mega-hit.

Yeah the violence, blood and the sheer gore of MK was what made it "THE" game to play. It was the first of its kind and even today there has not been a fighting game to match it. _________________ -----------------------------------

Mortal Kombat gamers tend to look at the fatalities first. When DA came out, most gamers were pissed because the fatalities were limited.. so they shifted there eyes towards the graphics and the gameplay and thats what the game was truly made for. Not the fatalities. _________________

Not the fatalities. | WTF are you talking about. i mean the fighting is really cool. better moves then anyother fighting game. but come on. you think that it was the fighting. and the fatality's had nothing to do with it. wow. the fatalitys make mortal kombat. mortal kombat. if they didnt have fatalitys it. would be the same as street fighter or something.

Yes, the blood and gore was the main thing to make MK a huge phenomenon. But the fact that the games were pure fun to play, and all the hidden secrets and cool stuff to find kept us interested, and waiting for the next one. Violence can't sell a game on it's own, you only have to look at the shitty MK clones (remember crap like Way of the Warrior?) that came after to see that.

VIOLENCE, BLOOD, AND THEFT. keyword. VIOLENCE.

True, but violence isnt the only thing that made it fun! The story was the most important part...if it wasnt for the story there would not have been a sequel, no movies or anything! _________________ Im Back B)

N'ah... Sonya in MK1 wasn't hot (MK1 started it, man), and the ninjas weren't really a big deal at the time, they were, of course the most popular, but only 2 were playable. Plus, most of those ninjas in the Mk3 series weren't really that popular..... ask anyone who's not a hardcore fan.
MK1 was so popular because it was fun--the fatalities drew your attention to the game, but after that, it was the fact that the game was simply fun to play that kept you there. Plus, it didn't look like a cartoon, like the only other fighter doing well at the time. (Street Fighter II) _________________ Those were $500 sunglasses, asshole.
