I don't see how that effects his popularity with other players. Ed Boon's favorite character could be Kano, and he could advertise him to death, but that wouldn't mean he'd be one of the absolute fan favorites.
The advertising doesn't seem to play a major part either. For one, he isn't advertised THAT much more than other characters. In fact, Sub-Zero was more of the poster boy for MKD, and not Scorpion.
For two, everyone liked Scorpion ever since MK1 and 2. There surely wasn't a lot of exclusive advertising done to him then. He even had a minor role in both MK movies compared to the other characters. And all you ever saw of game advertising back then, graphically, was the dragon logo and the occasional Liu Kang pin-up or something.

The fact that Ed Boon's favorite fighter is Scorpion DOES affect how other people view him. Scorpion has a cool background, cool moves, and cool looks because of it.

Yea,..in mk2 he had more fatalities then some characters too. But the fact is to some people mortal kombat wouldn't be the same and to some people it wouldn't effect them at all. What I think is that Sub Zero,Scorpion,and Reptile and all the other ninjas of mk play a big part for the players of mortal kombat,mainly the ninjas are the people's favorite.

he or at least another ninja must be in it.
despite what people sometimes say about the ninjas being crap, they made the game what is whether or not you liked it and thats why it stands out more.
if i ask someone who played mk once in their lives, they will only remember the names of scorpion and sub-zero, so they cant leave and never will

Thats not entirely true. I have let my friends (4 to be exact) borrow my MK2 and Mk1 games and most of them only can remember Liu Kang, Kitana, and Sub-Zero. Only 1 person remember scorpion.
*btw, they never played mk before
