Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks
Mr. Hat and Mr. Fireball combat Outworld evil.
by Ivan Sulic

February 17, 2005 - Mortal Kombat is changing. Series overseer Ed Boon stood front and center at today's Midway event to tell us exactly how. He began explaining the huge alterations that are being made to his pride and joy by first insisting that everything would remain the same... wait what now? Ed means the new Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks represents a significant departure from the series' roots, but the same Mortal Kombat branded fighting gamers have come to know will still find release elsewhere. Shaolin Monks is new and very different, but the Deception and Deadly Alliance line is not kaput. Change and sameness, there you go.

At the most basic level, Shaolin Monks is a linear 3D beat 'em up that emphasizes an offline two-player cooperative mode. Though we've not yet been able to play the game, it's being described as a sort of Robotron for the melee enthusiast. Further questioning revealed that each of the controller's face buttons, in conjunction with the analog sticks, allows a character to strike opponents in a number of different directions quickly and effectively. Contrarily, we were also told that the face buttons were reserved for different types of attacks (including an aerial starter, a stunner and a smash), so that doesn't seem to lend credence to the Robotron boast, which was a game more like Smash TV, Total Carnage, and perhaps even Rise to Honor.

What we do know for certain is that the game utilizes the shoulder / trigger buttons of the Xbox and PlayStation 2 to modify the base attacks so that they can perform completely different moves. This comes together in an almost Tony Hawk-like fashion, which seems to be the trend for action games of late. Boon quickly pointed out that the combat system was so rich it allowed any attack to be chained to any other, which really emphasizes the kind of dynamic juggling the original MK helped to popularize.

Chaining attacks in action games can still be a pain if the functionality isn't there to accommodate the player. We know this, you know this, and Ed and company apparently do as well. In Monks, any combo of attacks can be interrupted at any point, regardless of where in an animation loop the game is currently running. This means that we'll not be forced to wait for our drawn out string of meticulously animated attacks to run their course before we can change our styles and go for a different kind of assault.

True, this new style of beat 'em up is a fundamentally different concept for a Mortal Kombat game. Knowing this, the developers are taking serious steps to make sure fans of the fiction will still feel at home. First, fatalities that exponentially increase in lethality, brutality, and reward are provided. Unlike MKs of past, pulling off fatalities here means expending a sort of accumulated power and then mastering a brief rhythmic mini-game. If you time your mini-game keys right, the satisfying end-all animation plays out. So far we've seen some typically outrageous decapitations, dismemberments and disemboweling, but the wickedest of kills featured Liu Kang ruthlessly shattering the knees, elbows, and neck of an enemy.

That intent focus on violence will not be the only familiar thing gamers can expect from this latest Mortal Kombat. Liu Kang and Kung Lau are the controllable stars of the title, but many of the series' notable favorites will fight with and against our heroes too. They include, but are not limited to, Johnny Cage, Katana, Raiden, Baraka, Lizard, Sub-Zero, Scorpion, Ermac, Mileena, and Jade.

Since the game takes place n Outworld during the events of Mortal Kombat II, expect to see familiar environments (spikes and blood and whirling fans of spiked blood). We spied all the typically grotesque death traps the series has been known for, but were also introduced to the concept of playing off the background to progress through levels. These simple environmental puzzles revolve around grappling and throwing enemies into manipulable chunks of the scenery. One room might require tossing villains through a brick wall to clear a path, while another might have to do with feeding a giant snake, crushing the bones of enemies into a massive fan, or even catapulting punks into the distance.

All of this excessive blood spillage climaxes with an undisclosed amount of boss fights. More analogous to traditional Mortal Kombat bouts, the boss fights are usually one-on-one or two-on-one affairs (where cooperative play applies). They include fighting beasts like Goro or Motaro while some ridiculously angry phallic serpent in the background spits venom all over the place. It sounds hard, but two players should be able to handle the task.

Even though Midway isn't taking this particular MK online, the cooperative mode boasts fancy, gameplay-enhancing super moves which makes it that more appealing. This devastating, all destroying attack, of course, differs from the already powerful assortment of upgradeable fireballs and flying hats that Liu Kang and Kung Lau will be able to toss.

From what we've seen, Shaolin Monks should really appeal to the gamer looking for a bit more out of his or her typical hack-and-slash title. At best it'll be God of War with a two-player cooperative mode. At worst we might expect a bloodier Demon Stone / Return of the King-styled game with a Mortal Kombat theme. Either way Shaolin Monks releases this fall, but we expect to see more by E3.

*Editor's note: This preview and the initial notes from which it was composed were originally written in a total of thirty minutes on an undersized laptop. Because of this, hilariously indecipherable lines like the following occurred:

"Firt thing they wanted to do when they made it an dvefgnture game was tyo make the game feel Fatakutues aksi ub there. Snapping leg at knee and then arm at elbow and then head. Rated E for everyone."

So please, be merciful when it comes to typos and misspellings.

If you're interested in this game, be sure to add it to your wishlist. You can keep notes, rank games, get updates by email, and more.
