MAME = Multiple Arcade Machine Emulator, you can play arcade versions of the classis mortal kombat games on this emulator, of course of have to own these games or else it's illegal to play it.
I own them, so it's fully legal for me to play them. Anyway you can grab a lot of pictures, movies from mame.
Lot of great website content can be produced by mame.
MAME has a wide selection of games, i currently use them for recording fatalities.
You can get the latest mame version from: http://www.classicgaming.com/mame32/

Owning the original arcade entitles you to play it on the arcade machine and keep an unused backup in the original medium, which would mean having a second copy of the ROM chips. Playing it on MAME is still illegal.

Tons and tons of people get emus and play downloaded roms and it is all illegal unless the rom is some kind of homebrew or, in very rare cases, has been made open to the public to get. I doubt there are many games though that would be legal to get.
