Scorpion -> cool sound name 90s style.
Subzero -> Ice, if I remember right he was originally gonna be called Frost, then there was a rumor that there was going to be a Female subzero in the oringal MK and her name was gonna be frost, so that eventually brought about Frost in MK:DA. XD
Raiden -> Lightning if Japanese if I'm not mistaken.
Jax -> Major Jackson Briggs mentioned in Sonya's MK1 bio.
Kabal -> from Cabal, which is a secret group or scheme of people who are plotting something.
Smoke -> Smokes
Jade -> A shade of Green.
Noob Saibot -> (Ed) Boon (John) Tobias
Tsu Hao -> Hao = Vietnamese dime/penny smallest denomination. 10 Hao = 1 Dong
MoKap -> Motion Capture
This is kinda funny: Shao Kahn -> Kahn, Louis Isadore. 1901-1974.

It then could mean Cybernetic Robotic Artificial Xoskeleton. I'm sure that Midway's naming is quite coincidental. But one can never be too sure. hehe.

I dont agree with how Sub-Zero's named out. If that was so, then the female Subzero for MKDA would have been named immediately "Frost". In concpets of Frost, the beta name was "She-Zero".
Also, I think Shao Kahn's names had something to do with the Mongolion Khan clan is asia....idk for sure.
I am pretty sure to where Ashrah got her name though.....Ok, Ashrah is a demon. There is a biblical demon known Baal. His female consort is known as the demon.......*drum roll*.....Asherah!!! (that is how you spell her name!)
All they had to do is drop the "e" and there you have a kick ass name for a kickass exdemon!!!
I think there are more that I know.....
Sonya - Boon's sister
Tanya - Boon's other sister
Reptile - ummm...reptile?
Sub-Zero - temp below zero (that's really cold!!!)
Ermac - ERror MACro
Rain - ummm...rain?
Chemeleon - animal that CHANGES color
I think that's all i know so far.....

I this this topic should be renamed too: MK Name Origins
I think i might know more....
Wasn't Raiden named after an already eisting character from a movie that the MK team liked. I think that's why Raiden's name used to be "Rayden". Finally the MK team got the name "Raiden" copyrighted so they can use it.....
Hotaru - a kind of beetle. Concepts of Hotaru in MKD shows taht his armor was supposed to look more insect-like, so its proves it.
Scorpion - deadly spear = deadly sting. (reference to the animal scorpion?)
Blaze - fire
Oni - term for "demon" in asia.
Li Mei - a common Asian name for a girl.....just guessing....maybe the name actually means somthing...
Bo Rai Cho - a pun for "borracho" which is the spanish word for "a drunk man"
Kano - "KANNOnball?"
Darrius - common name for a male
Kira - common name for a girl
I would like to know where Mileena and Kitana got their names....
Also, maybe the reason WHY they got those names could be explained.

You are quite correct on the Raiden belief. The Lord of Thunder in the movie Big Trouble in Little China, is undoubtedly Raiden. And the old version of Shang Tsung is obviously the old man who was the main bad guy in the movie. You guys should watch it some time. It's kinda fun.
