i beleive they are related to the original kung loa thats the kung loa your thinking of that died before the tournament to the hands of goro

To make it more simpler....
There are TWO Kung Laos.
The original defeated Goro and ruined the Outworld's 9-in-a-row win.
Eventually, Outworld gets 9 straight victoires again, and this is where MK1 takes place.
Liu Kang (a descendant of Kung Lao) beats Goro and Shang Tsung (MKSM takes place)
Kang allies with Kung Lao, who is also a descendant of the original Kung Lao, and takes MK2 into Outworld. (since they are descendants of the same guy, then they are related somehow. Maybe cousins.)

I thought it was Shang Tsung who was defeated by Kung Lao, but then ST recruited Goro, and Goro beat Kung Lao.
Correct me if I'm wrong

To further explain.....
Back in the days of the original Kung Lao, Shang Tsung had won 9 stragiht victories in Mortal Kombat. One more win and Earthrealm would go to Shao Kahn. the original Kung Lao defeats (not kills) Goro. This leaves Outworld to win another 10 victories in a row AGAIN to claim Earth. in the next tournament, the original kung lao is defeated (maybe killed, idk). 8 more victories, and here comes MK1...
Liu Kang defeats Goro and Shang Tsung and leads it to MKSM.

Actually, here's what happened. 
Mortal Kombat used to be a tournement about honor and such, but then Shang Tsung was placed in charge of winning it for Outworld by Shao Kahn. Tsung successfully won 9 out of 10 tournements, and in the 10th tournement came in the original Kung Lao. He defeated Shang Tsung and thus prevented Earthrealm from being invaded.
For his failure, Shao Kahn banished Shang Tsung to the cobalt mines of Shokan where he came across Goro - Prince of Shokan. He chose Goro to be his main champion in the coming Mortal Kombat and Kahn allowed him to again attempt victory in the next tournement.
The next tournement finally came and the original Kung Lao (who had defeated Shang Tsung in the last tournement) faced off against Goro. Goro's superior strength allowed him to overcome the original Kung Lao and Tsung steals his soul. With the original Kung Lao defeated, Outworld's forces win the tournement. Goro proceeds to winning 8 more tournements, and thus another 9 straight victories.
The 10th tournement is Mortal Kombat 1 game, where Liu Kang, a decendent of the original Kung Lao, defeats Goro and ends the winning spree of Shang Tsung and Goro.
And that's the story of the original Kung Lao.
I believe the Kung Lao from Mortal Kombat 2 is a fellow decendant of the original one, making him and Liu Kang distant cousins. The original Kung Lao is also seen in the TV series Mortal Kombat Conquest, but in that show he is defeated by Shao Kahn's shadow priests (which does not follow the game storyline.)

exactly, but in mortal kombat 2 shang sung wants to betray shao kahn, and stuff for being banished and horrible treatment, i belive thus leading to ultimate betreyal in DA
