Who cares about the medallion? The issue is about Sub-Zero's ice hands.
These are attributed to his ability to summon ice powers. Also, for those that did not see the movie, Sub-Zero can freeze anything he touches making him one of the fiercest warriors only second to Scorpion.

 I just think the icy hands were just decoration & wern't ment to have anything to do with the MK storyline whatsoever.
