Why is it that a few characters in Shaolin Monks seem to put their thumbs up. Scorpion puts his thumb up before dying (a T2 reference or just to let kang or lao know that he is fine???) and also if you are defeated during the 3 final bosses shao kahn puts his thumb down at you before killing you with his wraith hammer.
Does any of this seem unusual t you?
I myself think its kind or corny _________________ --- Ing

Maybe the MK team just made the thumbs up ala Terminator 2 thing in Scorpion's "death scene", just for fun not because Scorpion congratulated Kung Lao/Liu Kang in beating the hell-ninja. _________________

Actuallly, the Roman's didn't use a "thumbs down" to tell the gladiator to kill his opponent.
They pointed their thumb to the side and moved their hand in a stabbing motion. The gesture was meant to replicate the motion of stabbing an opponent with a knife.
Just some useless knowledge _________________ "Sworn to avenge....condemned to Hell.

actually...
The Romans pointed [b]up[b] to signify death, because back then, death in the colliseum was considered good entertainment. _________________ Very Angry Girls Instigate Negative Attitudes.

I did a bit of quick research, and this article actually indicates that we're both right, or both wrong. "Thumbs up" and "thumbs turned" were both ways to indicate "kill the opponent." Apparently different hand gestures were used in different eras and in different situations, and under the rule of different Caesars:
http://ancienthistory.about.com/od/games/a/thumbsup.htm
Another article with another point of view, saying that "thumbs-in" may have meant "life" while "thumbs down" meant "death":
http://www.unrv.com/culture/gladiator.php
And here's a piece from an article from wikipedia, indicating that we're not exactly sure how the different signals were used:
"At the end of a fight, when one gladiator acknowledged defeat by raising a finger, the audience could decide whether the loser should live or die. It is known that the audience (or sponsor or emperor) pointed their thumbs a certain way if they wanted the loser to be killed, but it is not clear which way they pointed. It is possible that they pointed their thumbs upwards if they wanted the loser to live, and downwards if they wanted him to die; or, they may have done the opposite, pointing downwards if they wanted the gladiator to live. Another possibility is that they raised their fist but kept their thumb inside it if they wanted the loser to live, and pointed down to signify death. A gladiator did not have to die after every match - if the audience felt both men fought admirably, they would likely want both to live and fight for their amusement in the future. A gladiator who won several fights was allowed to retire, often to train other fighters. Gladiators who managed to win their freedom - often by request of the audience or sponsor - were given a wooden sword as a memento."
So in any case, nobody really knows the truth _________________ "Sworn to avenge....condemned to Hell.
