I just recently pulled out my old Game Gear versions of MK. I get extremely bored in my one geography class, and since I don't feel like blowing $250 on a PSP, I figured the Game Gear would suffice.

And that's the damn truth. Only single children with happy married parents could afford and walk around with one of those basterds. Just kidding, I wouldn't say that if I wasn't poor. Razz

I've read that, when the classic MK games were first released, the Pc version of MK1, MK2 and MK3 were better than the other home console versions and that MK4 had better graphics on the Pc than on the N64 and PSX versions. I've also read that the Pc version of MK1, was almost an exact translation of the arcade. So I would like to know; what was different about or missing from it?

MK1 for PC was nothing special and nowhere near arcade. I still think MK1 for Amiga was considerably better.

Mk2 for PC was terrible.

MK3 for DOS is great. Best home port of an MK game ever. Its colors were a little washed out but they got the gameplay, sounds, animation, graphics all spot on. It was just a ton of fun.

MK3 for Windows is terrible. Its the same as MK3 for PSX and UMK3 for Saturn minus the ultimate add-ons. All of which suck.

Mk4 for PC is pretty much as bad as MK4 for the PSX, except you can edit the game to put in better models and your own skins which is fun for like a minute. MK4 for N64 had much better graphics. And MKG for DC was the best.

In mk1, on the special edition pack and mk3 on midway arcade treasures 2, why does the sound malfunction in fatality mode; and in mk2, why doesn't the graphics play as smoothly as the arcade version, considering the power of the 128bit consoles?

From what I've seen in MAME, I'd say MK games are more difficult to emulate than other games of the time. I know MK2 and UMK3 used a really strange processor, something with a ton of commands built in that they didn't even use. That may be part of it. And also, I don't think a ton of time was spent emulating it on the consoles.

Preach it! Amiga MK1 was the best home conversion of MK1 I've ever come across. The only aspect lacking was the backgrounds, as they had to cut corners there to make the characters, sounds and effects as near to the arcade version as possible.

Amiga MK2 however...not so good.

I have played all versions of MK1 on all platforms.
I can say, that the best version including graphics, sounds and gameplay is the UPGRADED pc version of MK1.

Now, alot of people don't know this, but there are 2 versions of MK1 on PC, the first, came on 3 floppy discs and took about about 10mb installed, it had shocking audio and sound, using midi drivers and PC speaker. The upgraded edition of it was on CD and installed took up 16mb of space, the extra 5MB was wav audio music and sound effects. The upgraded version was only available for a short time in the MK1 + MK2 pack, MK2 also had some upgrades, mostly graphics and speed issues, like when entering the aiculedssul cheat.

Regards,
