Okay, here's the problem. I have Mortal Kombat, and it's one version whereby you can choose between Low, High and Very High settings. The Very High setting is for Pentium use (High catered to 486. Get it?)
Of course, relative to the computers of yesteryears, our computers are uber. However, Mortal Kombat runs ridiculously slow on my computer, yet at normal speed for MK2. My MK3 doesn't run since I'm perpetually asked for a CD when I already have it in
Anyway, MK is very slow and thus the terrible speed is getting in the way of fun.
Also, the sound only works when I use the VDM sound emulator. The music is slowed down (together with the game speed), and the sound turns out to be Adlib, even though I have set it to be Sound Blaster. Is there a way out of my problem?
I have tried lowering the graphic setting to Low, which didn't work (obviously!), and I've set compatibility to Windows 95. I am running Windows XP with SP2.
Thanks a million! Great to be back to this great game!

How fast is your computer and how much RAM does it have?
The best bet is to download dosbox:
http://dosbox.sourceforge.net/news.php?show_news=1
Dosbox is a DOS emulator. So you would run it and get a window that has DOS in it. Then you mount the directory or drive that has a game on it into dosbox like this:
mount c c:\gamedir or something like that (check the help with it).
I have played MK3 in it and it ran fantastic for me with sound and everything, and netplay. _________________ UltimateMK.com - The ULTIMATE Source of Kompetitive Mortal Kombat Information

I'll be happy to field the MK3 question.
More than likely it is set to reading drive D as CDrom. I've had this problem with a few games because my cd/dvdroms/burners don't start until drive I.
A lot of older games require that you use drive D.
Now you can check microsoft's website for how to change your CD drive letter. Though if you have D set to a HD it'll be impossible with out certain programs.
The other thing you can do is go to a website called Megagames. Google it. Inside that website you will see a section on the left called trainers. Follow that link go to the letter M go to the page that has Mortal Kombat 3. Go to the section that says CD cracks. Download the appropriate file. What will happen is that it will bypass your cdcheck. (an early form of copyright protection.)
If that still don't work, let us know. There's more answers in the mists.

You're pretty right, my CD drive is drive E. D is a hard disk drive, which exacerbates the problem.
Any way to edit MK3 to make it read from E drive instead?
And yeah, Dosbox works my MK real fine, though it has a tendency to slow down suddenly halfway. The sound is a bit choppy too.
If it bypasses CDcheck, won't I be having no music?
Edit: No matter, I decided MK3 isn't as fun as the other 2 classic MKs. My version isn't very stable anyway. It still has the crashing problem.

There's plenty of ways around it. One is to dump the drive to an image and use Alcohol 120% to mount it on a virtual drive. After that you can get some programs that skip over the cd check which will play whatever is available into the assigned cd rom. Depends on the maker of the cd crack though.
The other thing that you can do is get a program called Partition Magic. You have to be aware partially of what you are doing, but you basically set it up, it will re-assign drive letters as you see fit. Set it and forget it. I know you can technically still change it in windows as long as D isn't the primary directory for windows. But I wouldn't recommend it unless you know what you are doing in dos.
So partition magic, or alcohol + cd crack.
Those would be you most primary options. The two programs cost money, but I'm sure you can google ways to get around that.

Partition Magic is a bad idea. Thats going way overboard and has potential to screw up the comp just for this game.
You can get free demo copies of MagicISO or ISOBuster to rip a CD to an ISO file and then get Daemon Tools which is free to mount it as a virtual drive. Thats the lightest way, free way to do it. _________________ UltimateMK.com - The ULTIMATE Source of Kompetitive Mortal Kombat Information

If you don't know what you're doing, I agree. Believe me, I've had my trial and error. But in order to remap a physical drive in XP it's the easiest way to go about it.

Err.. I DO have partitionmagic. That's why I have 2 drives.
Anyway, I'm just sticking to the first 2 MKs. Classic enough.
MK4 could be there to look good, though the game is broken since you can use the lockdown 4 hit combo to win the game o_O

Anyway, my MK3 was faced with this weird bug: It only gave me about 3 or 4 seconds to pick a fighter, and it never had this bug before.
I'm still coping without music. DosBox doesn't like MK3.
Edit: Problem solved. Mame rocks.

I guess something has changed in DosBox settings or there is an incompatibility with your computer. MK3 runs near perfect in DosBox for me.
But, MAME is much much better. _________________ UltimateMK.com - The ULTIMATE Source of Kompetitive Mortal Kombat Information
