I wouldn't hope much. Even MK4 was somehow funny compared to the MKs before it.
MKDA, MKD, MKA were so...DARK and sinister, it wasn't even MK for me anymore.
MK vs DC isn't that good of an idea, when you think about it. It's like MK's and DC's answer to Marvel vs Capcom, "In your face! Now we've got a crossover fighting game, too!"
But, hell, if MK9 it's nothing like MKDA or MKD, I would be gladly surprised.

Same here iv got a feeling that ill be seeing something similar to MK vs DCU but I don't want that. And the rumours of MK vs Marvel kan just fuck off.

I'm really hoping for the safety of the MK series.
They know what the fans want... so what should they do?
Give em what they want.

Hmm, but you shouldn't think all black-and-white about it.
1) They probably don't even know what the fans want.
2) Even if they did go around the internet, spending time on reading forum posts from MK communities, they would see that many opinions vary.
I, for example, don't like the 3D MKs at all, which doesn't mean that many others don't like them.
It's incredibly time consuming to do what the fans want, cause many fans don't even know what they want. Can't please the whole world, man.
3) And it's not about saving the series, it's about getting the money.
They had an idea in the beginning, they made games for Enjoyment + Fame and in the end + Money.
Remember that Ed Boon said Armageddon was gonna be the last? Many fans wanted another sequel, so they had to make another game.
Guess what? It made money.
4) The majority of the people who buy Mortal Kombat are the ones that buy it just for the looks of gore and violence and not for the (now shitty) gameplay. They are the new generations that don't know that there was even a Playstation One. 
So when you think about it, they'll make more this kind of Mortal Kombat as long as there's money coming out of it.

Without money, the series will die.
The fans want good old classic MK style fighting pre-deadly alliance, they want their favorite characters to return, they want GOOD fatalities back, they want the blood and gore, they want... MK the way it was meant to be.

Ah well, you've got a point.
But it's hard to make it good, man!
Like this: MK 1-3 all had IDEAS to start with.
They were expected to be good, but not that anticipated as the new ones are.
With MKDA they started making stuff up just cause they HAD to, they had no ideas to start with. I honestly think that's what slowly killed the series.
And the point I'm saying this is cause I think MK9 is being rushed, too.
...But you have no idea how I want myself to be wrong.

It's horrible just THINKING about it. I'm never gonna get that image out of my head now. IT'S PAINFUL!! I think getting hit by a brick launched out of a cannon at full freakin velocity wouldn't be as painful as that thought!
