It will be the end in one sense...I believe Ed Boon said it best:
"The end...of this chapter."
This will be the final MK on the 'current' gen consoles (Xbox, PS2, GC), and will probably be the last game to have this roster of characters. Some fan favourites may survive like Scorpion and Sub-Zero and Raiden, but most of them can be expected to die for good. That's at least the gist of what the MKTeam has been saying in the interviews.

Hum it strikes me as odd this question was asked but I guess forums are basically for question and answeres so I'll answer this. With a brand new fighting engine implemented you can bet this isn't the last Mortal Kombat(I have been waiting for air combat for a long ass time)"as I'm sure most of you have". Of course its the last mk on current gen that makes perfect sense since anything "current gen" is rather dead now.
But Mortal Kombat will always live on its fan base is too big for Midway to loose. What will happen is all the MK characters will die(hello??armageddeon) except maybe Raiden(he already died anyway and yet hes still a god) to lead the new chapter in Mortal Kombat. I fully plan on seeing the customizing your own MK character to shoot through the roof and be awesome. I think the reason all the MK characters will die is cause you could just simply create the character yourself in the create-a-character and the story lines haven't exacly been canon from the beginning(are sub=-zero and Scorpion enemies or not..depends on the game). I don't know about you but I'm definetly wanting to Kill of Shao Kahn..that F***** is annoying always promising me "you will die" and hes the one that dies..how typical. I'm gonna love playing this on my 360 thanks to backwards compatibility..yummmmy
