I'd say Rain looks more like an Edenian prince to be honest. The whole cape and armor style looks more like that of an upperclass soldier than a ninja or simple general. Perhaps he got promoted for continually serving Shao Kahn despite Edenia's seperation from Outworld, and through Kahn's near downfall. |
then how did they originally got the idea of rain being a ninja in the classic games.

For some reason I always thought of Rain as being more refined and elegant
Though come to think of it alot of the earlier Fan Fics before MKDA tended to portray Rain in this manner perhaps thats where the MK team got their inspiration

Because they were taking advantage of the pallet swp to make more characters.

A.) Limited memory on the old games, making him a simple pallett swap.
B.) Read the last parts of my quote, I said he could have been promoted after continuing to serve Kahn after Edenia's seperation, which happened post MK3. This explains why he looks different than a ninja as well and may explain the "promotion to a prince" theory I came up with.

hmm seems reasonible..but im going to miss the ninja rain..hapfully he will have an alternate costume of a ninja suit

But in MK:SM we can see that Scorpion and Sub-Zero doesn´t have the same uniform. So I think that the only reason why they had the same uniform (MK1-UMK3) was that it was easier for midway to create palette swap  |
I couldn't sleep all last night until I wrote this down to remind you smiley98. Scorpion and Sub-Zero had the exact same style of ninja gear from MK1 to MK3. Scorpion's became different only by the time of MK4. Or, if you want to argue that it didn't, I have another explanation:
Scorpion and Sub-Zero's were the exact same (except Scorp's was yellow, to mock the Lin Kuei as I said before). Since he killed Sub-Zero in MK1 (the one that killed him), he would no longer need to wear his clan's original uniform, as he avenged him own death, thus making him worthy of his clan's title. Therefore, even if it was different from MK2 and up, he still had the same one as Sub-Zero until he avenged his death. Also, in Mythologies Sub-Zero, they had the same uniforms, but different colours:
This was of course before Scorpion's death, when we was a member of the Shirai Ryu and not a spectre. And here he is again with the same attire as Sub-Zero in MK1, as Scorpion and a spectre, where he finally avenged his death:

I saw Rain in his Armegeddon outfit in Deception if you go into Kontent and look for Concept Art of Lui Kang's Tomb it shows Ermac and Rain fighting which led me to believe before unlocking all characters in Deception Rain was playable but to my dismay I was Decepted and Holltaru and Kira were the 2 fighters I have'nt unlocked.
