Sega had failed because their Saturn was too expensive when it first came out. When it started picking up Nintendo had just lost footing as the forefront with the failure of the Virtual Boy, but Sony decided that that time was perfect to release a system that was geared towards 3D polygonal processing. Unlike the Saturn which was geared for 2D, even though it has 2 processors unlike sony's 1.
Later they made a dreamcast, unfortunately they didn't have enough game support. They also lacked enough advertising. Even though the system is superior to the PS2 and came out 3 years before, they lacked a DVD capability. Sony again, touted it's only strong suit.
At this point Sega had lost so much on console sales they pulled from the console wars.
Later Sega downsized a lot of their programmers. And hired a lot of 'newbie' programmers to hype their old library. The graphics were wonderful, but some of the games just fell flat. Games being an even more competitive market than consoles.
Sega decided to cut its losses and sold itself off. They were bought by Sammy (I think, I'd have to check but I don't wanna).

I have always been a Sega fanboy. Now that they are gone from the console game, I worship Nintendo, because they are the only current company that knows about games. We sell all the old school Sega and Nintendo products at my work see pic: - TMK WORKING HARD

I play a lot of old school games. I got the 3D controller for NiGHTS, and let me tell you, it makes all the difference in the world, and is absolutely necessary for Sonic R. I took a pic of some of my controllers (Jaguar, Saturn, Genesis, 3DO etc. etc.)
