Post subject: How did you Pick a Fav MK?

I realize that each person has their different favorite Mortal Kombat. I am not asking which game is “best.” What I am wondering is how different people went about deciding amongst such a great number of growing titles what their favorite MK is. Or, if any of you picked a favorite at all. I would like to try to narrow down my list and pick my favorite. I would like to know some of your favorite and how you arrived at that decision, to better help me pick. Thank you and have a nice night.

I find that certain variables include:

-Which characters are playable (many MK's lack fan fav's)
-How many characters are playable (this is better for replay value)
-Which stages and stage fatalities are there
-Graphics (though this is one of the lesser variables)
-Game storyline and endings (this is one of the big reasons for me)

Let me give you an example. MK3 doesn't have the best graphics when compared to MK4, MK5 and MK6. It's boss is very shitty in comparison to others like Shao Kahn and Onaga, and the roster of characters is poor due to the lack of so many favourites. This game generally is never seen as a favourite because of the variables listed above, it hardly matches any of them in a positive way.

Take Deception, which has amazing character roster, badass graphics, tons of levels and fatalities, and a damn good storyline. It had a larger roster of characters and more fan fav's were seen in this, and that alone made it a much more popular game in the eyes of a lot of MK fans.

So, there you have it. I personally like MKT the best so far (well, once Armageddon is released that won't be anymore) because it has every character from MK1 - UMK3 and them some, the story is the best of the 3 original games as far as I'm concerned, and lots of sweet levels. I even rank it higher than Deadly Alliance because of the roster of characters available in MKT and the storyline. But that's just me.

By the way, welcome to Total Mortal Kombat. Smile

I couldnt have said it better Amphibious. MKT wins the vote mainy for a few key reasons:

Tons of fighters
Decent story (if somewhat conflicting) lines
The controls are perfect (I like these a tad more then the new fighting systems)
And it has the true master of MK characters, Stryker Smile

For me It's defitnely Trilogy too. How can you go wrong with a game that features every damn character in mk history. Of course like Amphi says when Armageddon comes out that will be my favorite all time Mortal Kombat game.

I picked my favorite (UMK3) based on gameplay quality. UMK3 has it. The final version of MKT for PSX comes close, but with the bosses, Noob, and Rain playable it becomes too broken to play seriously without banning characters. If they had tightened it up so that every character was somewhat balanced (and make it an option to have the bosses on the select screen) it would be #1.

4 is right beside 3 on the keyboard, and when I'm speedily typing, I make mistakes. Though it should have been a bit obvious I was talking about MK4 when I mentioned it didn't have Shao Kahn and it was a "shitty boss", oh well.

I too lean closer to Trilogy than most others. It is so hard to pick because they all are special in their on way. Even the three versions of 3 MK3, UMK3, and MKT are more than just the some of their parts. If I lined up the Arcade MKs together I would probably put it, tentatively, as 2, 1, and 3. The question comes in when I try to add UMK3 and MKT to the picture. I have probably played MKT the most and have the most pleasant memories with it. Well, it along side MK2. I also question whether or not I will give MKT up for Armageddon. But it looks like MKA will not have truly all the characters, but rather most. Meat may or may not be in the game. And most people probably both fans and the design team don't even remember Chameleon and Khameleon. So they probably won't "waste" time and money putting them in to make a truly complete game. MKA will mot likely fall 3 characters, at best, short of what it is intended to be for no more reason than lack of interest. But when considering my question I must play best case scenario and say, let us say, MKA does include every blessed character under the sun. Will I still like it for that fact alone? As mentioned earlier, the new games do indeed play different than the originals. Also, MKG is the truly last game with the original fighting engine, not MKT. Part of my wants to go with MKT, but my mind can't find a "good" reason why. MKG was the fastest and most polished of the original engine. And MKA will have, if we're lucky, all or at least most of the characters. All the big name ones at least. With that in place, what does MKT truly have left to its name? It will no longer be the most characters, and it is not the last of its engine. If anything, it could be called the 2D Mortal Kombats. But the Game Boys are 2D even after MKT. So, I guess all Trilogy will have left of its name is the last "major" 2D Mortal Kombat fighting game with all the previous game's 2D characters and the most polished of the 2D engines. It sounds so, well, not impressive any more. Also, it truly didn't have all the backgrounds either. It had most. It did manage all the characters though. I guess my problem with this is my top 3 would almost have to be MKT MK2 and the upcoming MKA. MK1 would be in place #4 on my list. Why I place MKT on top and MK1 above UMK3 I can not say. Something is special with all the characters and most of the backgrounds in the MK3 engine. When you just have the UMK3 characters and backgrounds, the game falls beneath 2 MKA as far as I am concerned. So, in the way, I must only be judging partially on merit of engine. But I don't seem to want the new character roster of MKA. So I must be partially judging on roster. I am trying to pick my favorite thing, which I think might be a Mortal Kombat. My trouble is that I keep getting drawn to MKT. The thing is, in a few months there will be no logical reason why. If I liked it for its engine, I would have stopped my life at MKG. If I liked it for most characters, I would no doubt through myself onto MKA. If I liked it for best atmosphere, I would go to MK2. And if I liked it for most nostalgic, I’d give my heart to MK1. So, there you have it. For each type of rating I'd give myself to a different game. So, why do I want so much to make this game my favorite, when it never even shows up on the other categories' lists?

Sorry, I was confused because of this sentence:

Quote:
and the roster of characters is poor due to the lack of so many favourites
.

You know that both MK3 and MK4 lacked many favorite characters (and I think that MK4 had more more favorite characters than the former MK3. for ex.- Scorpion, Reptile, Raiden, Johnny Cage etc.) Wink

Forgive me smiley, I was implying the MK3's (MK3, UMK3, MKT) as one.

I prefer MK3 (rather than UMK3 and Trilogy) interesting storyline, I love the art of the endings and I defeated Shao Kahn for the first time on this one with Sindel Wink
