As frightening as this is to hear, it's not so bad. At least, not as bad as I remember it to be. Hear me out. While there is without a doubt no way this movie ranks as a "great" or even "good" movie, I boosted it to "sub-parr" from "god awful". Reasons why? Here are a few:

-The fight scenes, particularly Smoke vs. Liu Kang, Scorpion vs. Sub-Zero, Cyrax vs. Jax, were all really awesome.

-Some of the quotes in this movie are fantastic and they really grow on you. (ie "In six days, mankind was created. So too, shall it be destroyed!" -Shao Kahn)

-The acting, as terrible as it is for characters like Jax, Sonya and Raiden, are played relatively well, given the horrible script dialogue they were forced to endure. Shao Kahn's actor used to bug the hell out of me, but having watched it again, he's not so bad. Not the best, but decent. Liu and Kitana are once again casted well.

-Story plot is...shitt. I'm sorry to say, but the movie DID butcher a lot of the good stuff that could have been in this movie. I've always loved the MK3 storyline but this movie didn't do it justice. Nevertheless, as a mind-numb watcher just watching the movie for the hell of it, it grows on you. While a lot of characters die far too easy and quickly (ie Rain, Sub-Zero, Nightwolf, Sheeva, etc.) there are elements of the plot that are acceptable.

-Raiden was played HORRIBLY! So bad I want to vomit sometimes. However, giving the movie some slack because it's MK (and only for that reason), I can endure watching this sad excuse of a Raiden, mostly for when he gets pwned the hell out of by Shao Kahn (I laugh when I see this, it's priceless).

-Jax was STUPID in this movie. I have to say, he alone is the one thing (if I could only pick one) that just brutalizes this film. Jax in the first movie seemed like a legitimate cop. In this, he seems like a street-educated, ghetto thug with plastic arms. His dialogue was supposed to replace the wittyness and humor of Johney Cage's, but it only proved to make this movie that much shittier. I can't think of one redeeming quality about this character or how he was acted out in this film.

All in all, this movie has a lot of fight scenes in it, a so-so character cast (some ok, some HORRIBLE), a story that is awesome but just acted/played out poorly, some great quotes, and memorable fight scenes (some even better than ones in the first movie, I dare say).

So, I boost my personal rating of this movie from a 2/10 to a 4.5/10.

Anyone want to comment on this review? Also, as painstaking as it might be, I ask those up to it to watch the movie aqain, then post here. You MIGHT be suprised at how you feel about it (as suprised as I am, because I detested this movie before re-watching it). Or, you might still vomit at it.

Razz Cheers.

Well, for most part I agree, but these were my main concerns:

1/ Raiden went from a jokester, to a PANSY!!! He could barely handle the three reptiles by himself, and he got his ass handed to him by Kahn TWICE.

2. Jax loosing his metalic arms. I mean, that just completly overides EVERYTHING about Mortal Kombat involving Jax.

3. The animality fight was horrible! I mean, it was over in a matter of seconds! Animality is supose to KILL you opponet, NOT get into a mythological rumble with them!!!

4. JOHNNY CAGE DIEING!!! That pissed me off so damn much! And with just a simple neck snap!!! Batsards....

thats all. I mean, the movie as far as movies go was decent, but compared to the games, was absolute crap.

I agree, Raiden was a serious joke. But not nearly as bad as Jax in this movie. His role in the first movie was perfect. He actually seemed like a believable god of lightening, with his wisdom and serious overtones, while strategically putting in the odd joke that fit his character. This Raiden was just a sad excuse of anything. Nonetheless, he did provide comic relief...when his ass was handed to him. Very Happy

Jax's metallic arms coming off was total BS. Just another thing to the list about how shitty/stupid his character was. Oh yes, and lest we forget that he did more damage without them. So much for quadroppling the muscle capacity. Confused

Anamality was pointless, but I'm glad it ended quickly. I prefer man to man, hand to hand fighting as opposed to poorly-made CG battles.

Believe it or not, I think it was wise to kill Cage of early. They couldn't get the original actor, which was the biggest let down. Because of this, having Cage survive in the whole movie would have made it worse, as the acting would have been horribly done as it was with Jax, Sonya and Raiden (the characters who were replaced with new actors). So I do appreciate his death because it prevented me from hating his character. Though I will admit, I'd have prefered to see a new actor play Cager through the whole film than have Jax in there at all. And that's sad. Boring

I give this Movie a 4.1/10. Like you Said Jax Had to be the worse character in this movie and was stupid. He also wasn't funny when He goes Shao Who?. He should friggin well know who Shao Khan is. But yeah they defitnely didn't make this movie resemble the Real game at all which is a letdown. If they do Make a third one please god let it resemble atleast umk3 or Deadly alliance or something from Beggining to End. And get some good actors for damn sake's. Of course some of the actors in this one were pretty good like Kitana, Etc. The Smoke and Liu Kang Battle and Jax and Cyrax and Scorpion and Sub Zero were the only three good fighting scenes i liked in the movie as well.

Nice review Amph...good work...

...personally I've liked Annihilation since I saw it in theaters...but then again...I am very wierd...

...it's definitely the fight scenes that gives way to the purpose of this movie...we can all agree the acting didn't quite do it for us...

...I personally liked the new Sonya as well (appearance-wise of course)...I know you were all leaning right in front of the tube when she fought Mileena...mmm...*drule*...

...yes, Jax was not as cool as the game made him out to be...but for the most part he served his purpose, he wasn't THAT bad...(just kidding, that was freaking horrible!)...the ending, with the whole morale thing...to shame, to shame...

...Rayden...*shakes head*...I think that says enough...

...overall...I enjoy watching it every time...especially watching Shao Kahn completely mutilate Rayden...Headbang...it's like watching Kobra try to beat up Goro...*cough* *cough*...dream on...

I have always said Annihilation was bad, but I have always given it props where it was deserved. I loved the fight scenes, the music was great...the sets and locations were cool, the main problem was the Script.

As far as Raiden goes, I liked the fact that Kahn took advantage of him making him weak Kahn: "You who would never let one of your precious humans die..." Raiden: "Trade me for Johnny Cage" Kahn: "Come bow, at my feet!" Kahn knew he could control Raiden making him weak.

It was cool meeting Brian Thompson who played Kahn in the movie, alot of people say he was a bad Kahn but I totaly disagree. I think he was great, and he looked badass.

Regards,

I also liked this film from the start. not one of my faves but I'm proud to say I own a copy.
Kahn is played superbbly IMO I did not think jax was too anoying till the end when he takes the SI off And remember the dude who replaced C.L. Raiden had the hardest preformance to follow and yes he failed. I'd rate this as 6.9/10

Actually I don't think that Christopher Lambert is the best Raiden I prefer Jeff Meek from MKC (Clancy Brown would make a good Shao Kahn judging from his performance in Highlander)

The ending of this film is disappointing I watched this last night along with the first one and Robin Shou's Red Trousers (which by the way is a good documentary and the audio commentary is funny. I loved the short film Lost Time that interspersed the documentary)

I thought Shao Kahn came off far too much as a dumb brute than the Outworld Leader and schemer we've come to know from the game series.

In MKA, Shinnok seems to have done most of this planning, while Kahn was the one who put it into practise. But he comes off way too much like a dumb brute than a smart ruler. Kahn kills off half of his fighters out of blind anger, and he decides to allow the Earthrealm fighters in at the end as opposed to keeping his Outworld legions there to prevent them.

I think they should have gotten the MK1 movie actor of Shao Kahn to play the part. This Kahn just didn't do justice in my opinion. However, his quotes were said well.

As for Raiden in this movie, here's some lines that may make you rethink about your choice:

-"It's a new look."
-"Can she fight as well as she looks?"
-"What's with the arms?"
-"You will do your best, that's all that can be expected of you. I will pray for you all." (decides to stand on the side lines then fight)
-You've all made me very proud, I will be watching you." (poorly acted)

Let's face it, he does NOT come across as a God of Thunder. He comes across like a moron who can't fight worth a can of assholes, and his dialogue is as bad as Jax's in some parts.

I have to agree that the "it's a new look" part was the single-most factor that butchered Raiden in this movie.

I actually like the movie in general, but as a sequal to MK1, it was horrible.

As much as i would have loved to see more of JC in there I liked the idea of killing him off since they couldnt get Linden. Though i must admit that kid didn't look too bad. Too me all the bad guys looked good; i.e. Motaro, Sheeva, Sindel and Khan was good though I thought he was a little small. I thought Jax's appearance was pretty good i mean in MKDA his alternate costume was a ghetto like character. The acting def. coulda been better but what do you expect from a former American Gladiator. Raiden my god was he terrible the only thing I liked about him in that was in the beginning when he did the lightening dive and made that cool battlecry. Sub-Zero wasn't that bad although i thought he was another one that was kinda small for his role. The fight scenes were great some better than the first movie. The music was good too. I dont recall Nightwolf dieing, but he was also well casted, going from the Indian in the Cupboard to the MK Shaman. I also didnt like the looks of the tarkatan they could have been a lot better. overall the movie was that bad. shitty script a lot crammed in could been better. 6.5/10
