no you can't. smoke only gives you side missions.

PS2:
Start in the Foundry. Grab the axe (the one you follow while it is being made). Go into the room with the lava. You must break the wooden door to enter this area. This is in the hallway where two arrow guards break through the walls. There is a part of the wall on the left side you can break by throwing an enemy through. Jump into the lava, then jump back out. Go into the hall to the right of the save statue then smash the barrel at the end of the hall by pressing Circle. Go up the ramp, and take two lefts, and smash only the barrel on the right. Go to the area with the Nitara weapon. This is the small cubby to the right/straight of the top of the ramp. Smash the barrel on the right. Go to the area with the stones that drop from the ceiling and smash this barrel. It is left off the cubby. Go back to the area with the Nitara weapon and smash the left barrel. Go back to the left of the top of the ramp and smash the left barrel by pressing Circle. Hold Circle to smash the ground. You should see a green glowing area behind where the barrels where if you did everything correctly. Step into the glowing area and press R2 to enter survival mode.
XBOX:
Circle = B
R2 = B
That's how you go into survival mode.

Just so you know "survival mode" isn't recommended by Midway, on X-Box it crashes after level 3 and on PS2 you put your MK:SM save games at risk, from Midway support site:
"Edited: 4/28/06: Access to the content being called “Survival Mode”, was removed from the retail version of Mortal Kombat: Shaolin Monks. This mode of play was removed from the storyline and menu. No objectives or rewards are associated with this mode of play as it was not part of the final product. Following the steps to access this mode puts your save game files and gaming session at risk. Gamers who have accessed this mode of play have experienced console crashes and/or corrupted save files. Midway Customer Support does not advise or provide help accessing this game play mode. "
