It was the deal he made with the Lin Kuei. If they gave Quan an assassin to find the amulet, then he would arrange for the destruction of the Shirai Ryu.

...yep...it was all in Mythologies: Sub-Zero...Quan Chi destroyed the clan and slew all of Scorpion's family...

Also Quan Chi had hired the Shirai Ryu to get the amulet as well. The Lin Kuei probably would have been destroyed instead.

I had an idea : those of you who are good at writing stories should do an alt reality MK universe were the Linkuei are killed by Quan Chi and scorpion and the Shirai Ryu were victurious in the Mythologies....
having died at the hands of Quan Chi not Scorpion Sub may not get tainted by the rage of scorpion and may not become a wraith (noob) and scorpion would have no rage... hummmm stroking my chin hair may be not..

...I'm working on a Lin Kuei one right now though I'm probably gonna stick with the storyline...that's a crazy idea...Sub-Zero being the specter and Scorpion being the good guy...
