...you have three general choices...Software...which is Norton and etc. though you'll find all of those to be ridiculously expensive and then you have to subscribe to the site to receive updates...screw that...
...there's online usage downloads...NEVER DO THEM...such as Yahoo's little thing...and other site specifics because if your internet goes down and you want to fix it...it's hard to use an online using anti-virus program isn't it?!
...third and best is offline usage downloads...I have used Search and Destroy which is downloadable and works offline...just update and scan weekly (daily recommended) and you should be set...though if you can't find it make sure the download works offline and don't pay money...most use donations which are optional...I suggest that... _________________ "...don't think it's yours just 'cause you marked it with your urine."

Anti-Virus:
Don't use McAfee or Norton, because they both take up way too much system memory, and will interfere with the smooth running of your PC more than neccessary.
I would recommend either Symantec's basic Anti-Virus, or Avast.
Spyware:
Adaware is a joke, so don't use it.
Either use Windows Defender, or Spybot.

Spybot! That's what I was thinking of...highly recommended...will wipe out everything...just update and scan...then bam! It's all gone...
...I had to use it to clean up all the crap Limewire left me with...now I don't download music and stick to CDs... _________________ "...don't think it's yours just 'cause you marked it with your urine."

In the screen I shown you, there is a message from the computer (After virus and spyware scan was complete) saying that there is a type of virus (it tells you the exact name in the yellow bubble) and the search and destroy cant pick up on it. _________________

Spybot is not an anti-Virus. While it sometimes will pick up some things that are considered viruses, it usually doesn't.
Avast is free to personal users. I would suggest using that if you don't want to pay for anything.

Hey man,
I use Norton Anti Virus with Norton Internet Security.
As for Spyware, I use 3 programs:
Ad-Aware: (gets rid of low level spyware and has the best UI)
Spyboy S&D: Great, gets rid of ALOT of high-risk spyware:
Xoftspy: This program is awesome, it updates almost everyday with new definitions, however you need to pay for it.
OHPE Ver 4.12_23: Fix:

(You need to be sorta computer savy to work it all out)

McAfee is far better than Norton Anti-Virus. When I used to use Norton, there'd be viruses it "couldn't delete" or get rid of. It also ran really slowly and didn't protect my computer. Since I got McAfee over a year ago, I have never once had problems with spyware or viruses. However, I will say that with the newest update, my computers have been running a bit slower because McAfee checks every site for viruses or spyware. It keeps the comp really safe, at the cost of a bit of speed. _________________

I stopped using McAfee a while ago. It runs anywhere from 8-12 processes at a given time. Symantec only runs 2-3. I'll agree that Norton can be pretty ass.

Norton will slow down your PC during a scan, thats for sure...but it has always protected me from threats, as long as It's up to date. as for not being able to delete files, when that happens they are always cache files in the IE folder usally in use by windows causing that problem, or marked as system files, extremly low level threats that do nothing, most of the time. Anyone with DOS skills can delete those easily, which is what I do.

You can also just disable system restore when you scan files (on XP and ME machines), which disables system file protection and allows Norton to delete all threats.
....wait, you are using DOS as a loose term to mean command prompt, right? I'm just wondering, because the actual DOS kernel was scrapped after Windows ME failed miserably.

Sorry, I say "DOS" meaning "DOS PROMPT" I know it was scrapped, but I don't call it command prompt.
