...the whole MKII thing was basically Kahn being pissed at Tsung...so of course he was probably demoted quite a bit...and since he was invading Earthrealm in MKIII he might as well take the comfortable throne for himself...

Ok, that leads to another question: If there's no tourniment, why is that an tourniment arena? (Does anyone get where Im going with this?  )

it was an arena in trilogy because it was it was an arena in one of the mk games 1,2, or 3
Trilogy was like armageddon is now
a sum of all the mk games in the time era

If I am not mistaken, the throne with the skulls on it was Kahn's. Although Shang Tsung was the one hosting the MK Tournament, Shao Kahn always had a personalized place to watch fighters fight for their lives. Then, the tough part came for them when Kahn got up. From here it was see ya later to almost everyone he faced. He was always thwarted by Liu Kang and his allies.
