They added in the Red Dragon, which I think was a leap of faith. They then added the Tekunin, a new Black Dragon, among smaller clans in the Konquest mode. I think it's realistic to have many because that is how it would be (or already is) in real life, but I think the Tekunin clan was stupid. What did you think the Lin Kuei was trying to do? The automating concept was used for the Lin Kuei initially to introduce 3 cyborg characters. After that, they wrote the concept out.
