to put your questions to rest, here's what the board and chat rules say regarding avatar and sig sizes.
13.) Sig / Avatar rules :- Avatar images are not to exceed 100k. Users are only 2 post 2 images at the most in sigs (unless posting extra images are small, or tiny...eg a smilie), with a decent size of 400 pixels width (maximum) and 150 pixels height (maximum). The sig images are not to exceed 100k.

a good rule of thumb is that if you aren't sure about something like this, consult the rules of the board, and if it's not covered there, then you can send me or Total-MK a message or make a topic if applicable. =)
