Mortal Kombat Mythologies
Part 03: Illusion's Promise By: Motocross Chick

Sektor was laid in bed at the Ice Temple. The room was comfortable, for a Ninja. Hung on the walls were awards that Sub-Zero won, banners with Kanji writing and in the middle of the room was a fireplace, which was lit.

The flames cast shadows on Sektor's face/helmet, making the robot look more deadly.

Illusion stayed by his side, holding his hand. When she awoke in the morning, she was happy to find that the robot had awakened.

"Hey," She murmured softly. "How are you feeling?"

"Well enough." The cybernetic Ninja replied in his robo-voice.

"Hm." Illusion smiled. "Why were you up there?"

"To become human once again." Sektor answered. "The Amulet; I was so close…"

The room became silent. The two could hear the others talking in the kitchen.

"We ruined everything for you, didn't we?" Illusion asked at last. Sektor did not reply.

The female Ninja felt sorry for her friend, thinking about her own family. (The story of Illusion's past is named The Hidden Shadows Clan. Look for it on this website)

Illusion looked into the robot's "eyes" and wondered what he used to look like.

"If we join together again, we'll have a better chance at getting the Amulet." Illusion explained. "I want my family back, and you want to be human. We both need each other…"

At these last words, Illusion realized how much Sektor meant to her, and she bit her bottom lip. Should she express her feelings to him further?

A knock at the door brought Illusion back to reality. "Come in,"

Cobra entered with Dragon Image behind him. "Sub-Zero wants to start training again."

Illusion stood up and followed the Ninjas out of Sektor's room. She glanced back at him and smiled. She promised herself that she'd never let him down.

Nightfall covered the descending sun and the pale moon emerged from its hiding space.

Illusion saw Sub-Zero standing in the training arena, gazing at the stars. She quietly walked to his side.

"Sub-Zero," She began, forgetting to say "Master". "How did the Amulet come to exist?"

The blue Ninja stared at her. She looked so lost and confused. He swallowed his anger of mentioning the past and said: "Thousands of years ago, Shinnok existed as an Elder God. The Elder Gods are the true rulers of all realms. They watch as worlds are created and destroyed and govern the realms with untold eons of wisdom. Shinnok, however, gave in to greed and illusions of false power by the new realm of Earth. If he could have that realm to himself, he would have power unmatched. He first would have to face the young god of thunder known as Rayden, who was appointed as Earth's guardian by the Elder Gods themselves. Their battle for the realm of Earth was fierce; causing the planet's near destruction and plunging it into centuries of darkness.

"Rayden soon discovered that Shinnok entered the realm through the powers of a mystical amulet. It allowed Shinnok to enter the realm without challenge and keep the other Elder Gods from intervening. The amulet could only be created once, and Rayden stripped it from Shinnok's possession. With the aid of the Elder Gods, he banished the fallen god into a place known as the Netherealm. Rayden buried the amulet deep within the mountains of Asia. He then created a massive temple within the mountain to house the amulet and appointed four guardians as the protectors of Shinnok's sacred amulet. Each guardian represents one of the four elements that make up the realm: Wind, Earth, Water and Fire. As long as the amulet remained on Earth, Shinnok would be trapped, forced to remain dormant for the rest of eternity."

Illusion stared at the ground. "So even if I did make it to the Amulet, I couldn't get my parents back with it, right?" She asked quietly.

Sub-Zero kept his temper down. "I didn't say that!" He corrected. "Rebekah, losing your family is hard, but to try to bring them back is...unwise."

"Why?" Illusion exclaimed with anger. "Do you think I can't do it? Why does it matter to you if I die up there?"

Sub-Zero grabbed her arm as she tried to walk off.

"Now you wait a minute!" He replied, his temper blazing. "I am the Grandmaster and I did not say you could leave!"

They stared at each other. Hatred was so strong that everything around them felt amoral.

"You're too young to understand the danger of the Amulet." Sub-Zero stormed. "Once you get a hold of it, you can't let it go. Shinnok takes over your mind."

"How would you know? You want it for yourself, right? To get your brother back. What makes you think that you won't become corrupt?" Illusion shot back.

"I am stronger than you are!" Sub-Zero replied. "I could handle it better. I didn't say that I wouldn't become corrupt, you just have a habit of jumping to conclusions!"

"What's going on out here?" Frost exclaimed, appearing at Sub-Zero's side. She put her arm around his waist and stared in bewilderment at Illusion.

"Nothing!" Illusion snapped. "Thanks for the lesson!" She said sarcastically to Sub-Zero, giving him a low bow.

She melted into the shadows.

"What's wrong?" Frost asked, gazing up at Sub-Zero's troubled face.

Sub-Zero sighed. "She's too young to understand the risk of the Amulet."

He looked at Frost's pretty face and kissed her.
