| Chapter 25: The past comes alive |
By: Shaun Penney |
The wind rustled a dreary aroma shadowing the presence of a once peaceful land. Where dances of light and a slow setting sun gave beauty to an undying land, only now looked dismal and without a soul to care for.
The Centaurs had trampled over many popular cities waging war with the human race. There plan simple, annihilate all who stand in their way. Legions swarmed and more would surely come. Beyond their destruction lied even more evil laughing some chaotic tune into the dissolving night. For this night would truly be Earth Realm’s darkest.
Subzero took a long boat from the temple of light. Traveling upstream made his way much easier then walking through the Tsi Numa mountains. He only looked back once to admire the view from the mighty structures that were developed so many years ago in China. Subzero wondered what would have happened if his life had been…different. But there was really no time to let one’s own mind wander that far from reality. He had a realm to help save, and a promise to keep. His first object at hand, finding help. A lone warrior named Night Wolf, a proud Shaman he had meant before, was one of his only contacts. Once sufficient help was acquired then he could go after the source of this hell that has once more overtaken Earth Realm. The corrupt sorcerer Quan Chi. It was he who found a way to turn his own living brother against him, and it was he who had all the power at this point.
Subzero breathed in this soggy air that did nothing but give him enough oxygen to live. It smelled of death. Time was running out and Subzero had to quicken the pace. He raised his hands and walked to the back of the boat. With a hard thrust of this fists, Subzero let a chilling fresh amount of thick ice shred out his palms and push into the water acting like a propeller. It was enough to give the boat more speed and before he knew it, he was sailing. The wind picked up and Subzero steered his way down stream through the Tsi Numa mountains.
As more time passed Subzero reached a rocky sledge in the river. It banked him towards an edge and Subzero forced himself off. He tied the boat down as it rocked back and forth through the rushing water. A wolf howled into the night.
Sub whipped his head in the other direction where he heard the crying animal. It was coming from a strange aura just overhead a thick brush in front of him. He drew himself closer towards this bright glowing aura as he quickly realized that it wasn’t an aura at all. It was a fire.
Smoke dazzled and poured through the brush as it became entangled in flamed. Subzero held his mouth as he began to cough a little. The amount of smoke encircling around him became too much. His eyes began to tear bad he had to shut them. The heat rushed like a hurricane and blew an awful stench sparking white yellow flames near Subzero. By now Subzero was backing up covering his entire face. His sense of direction became backwards. He should have been out of the huge thick brush, but he was not. The flames blew and bellowed all around him now. His mask would have done nicely if he had brought it. There was no time for regret now. Subzero let his hands apart. His eyes clenched down trying to keep his sight away from the heat and smoke of this freak occurrence. He charged the cold within himself and threw shower of ice into the air hoping it would melt and collapse the fire. He felt the rain come down hard and wet raining like a storm. It quickly dissipated everything around him as a stream of smoke lines hissed into the air as the fire around him died out. He threw similar showers of ice into every direction finally dying out this wretched blaze.
When the last of the heat blared away, Subzero opened his eyes and again he heard the echoing cry of a wolf still just ahead of him. Subzero trudged forward pushing easier through the broken and burned brush. Towards the edge he could see somewhat the remains of a small town now all but ashes on the ground. A large gray wolf stood in the center of this piled destruction. Tiny flames barely lit ate away at what was left of a small place. Subzero jumped through into the clearing and looked out as he saw the gray wolf crying again. Before him was another wolf, black and gray in color lying on the ground motionless. A large tear in its’ side had been torn opened. The wolf had loss to much blood and finally fainted into death. Subzero walked over slowly and bent down as he put a hand on the unsuspecting Gray wolf. It barely took notice of him as it panted in depression. Subzero brushed his fingers through the thick fur as the wolf finally moved away and began to glow.
Subzero stood up as the gray wolf began to change and become Night Wolf. He formed himself again and looked down at the lifeless wolf on the ground. Subzero saw there were tears in Night Wolf’s eyes.
“I’m sorry Night Wolf,” said Subzero. Night Wolf closed his eyes hard then opened them again. He then looked at the ice warrior with his face wet in sadness.
“I tract the centaurs here, tried to stop them. But there were too many. There was nothing I could do. I have failed.” He turned around and tried not to show any more fault on his face. He felt ashamed. Subzero walked towards him and put a hand on his shoulder.
“You fought with honor Night Wolf. Those who die with us do not die in vain. They will always be remembered. But you are not one of those fallen yet. I too am saddened by this war, but it is a war that only together we can win. This you know to be true” he said. Night Wolf turned his head.
“Liu Kang can no longer help us. We are without the chosen one. We cannot win,” he said. Subzero removed his hand and moved to face the Indian fighter.
“I know you know what’s happened to him. You must realize that if we don’t face our enemies, then they will surely take this realm for themselves for all time. I cannot let that happen, and as a warrior, neither can you”
“How can we defeat such evil by ourselves?” said Night Wolf. Subzero pinched a glare from his face, both truthful and wise.
“No one is unbeatable. Everyone has the ability to become stronger. We can beat our enemies. Help me Night Wolf. There is little time,” said Subzero. Night Wolf could tell that a person like Subzero could not be swayed into a path different then one already chosen for him.
“Where are they? Where is the heart of their power?” said Night Wolf. Subzero turned back around and patted Night Wolf on the back.
“Come, there is much to discuss.” He said as they began to walk. He brought him to the boat as they continued to travel back down stream. Subzero explained everything to Night Wolf since they last had met. About how He found Quan Chi in a mysterious hidden city and how his brother had become his new servant. About how Khameleon disguised herself as Jade and tried to kill him but Scorpion intervened and promised a duel with the Lin Kuei warrior at some point. Night Wolf took it all as a number signs pointing towards a perpetual Armageddon. If that was the case, then stopping it would be a number one priority.
The two dived directly into the night as a haunting moon shined above. Subzero knew the only way to be sure that what he saw in that fragmented illusive city was to return to where he had found it in the first place. If it did exist, they would have to find it again and put an end to Quan Chi and those who helped him. It would be a feat that would prove to be the hardest in any Mortal Test.
The boat reached a dock in the middle of nowhere. A place where fishermen go to capture a week’s worth of food. Subzero and Night Wolf exited and tied the boat back down just in case. It was still a few miles to where Subzero had found that city they would have to track their time well. Subzero watched in all areas making sure they weren’t followed. Even in the night one had to be careful not to be seen. The blood of the Lin Kuei still ran ice cold in his veins.
As the two approached a clearing Subzero suddenly stopped. Night Wolf turned around and looked confused.
“What is it?” he asked. Subzero held up a finger in silence. His eyes peered from his left to his right. Night Wolf stood still. Clearly Subzero’s senses had gone off. Subzero looked right at Night Wolf then like a bolt of lightening he dove right past him and began running in a direction back into a forest trail. At first Night Wolf didn’t understand what he was doing, then it became quite clear as he noticed a shadowed figure running up ahead of Subzero. Sub was chasing someone. Night Wolf wasted no time and picked his feet up running after Subzero who was running after a dark figure who was running into the darkness in a world where the trial of the best fighters would only survive…
