| Legends of the Lin Kuei |
| Chapter 17: Mortal Kombat |
By: Shaun Penney |
Another sunset gleamed over the treasured untouched lands of China. High in the mountains the Lin Kuei ice warrior Subzero unvealed himself and came down into the elegant city of Cha'iar. Rich in underworld trade, the city was quite fashioned in rumor and in solitude. Subzero had been here once before, on a mission during his younger years. He was sent to kill an enemy of the Lin Kuei and Subzero had done so in his a rather unusual style, freeze the man by his balls to death. The Lin Kuei masters had said to make sure he suffered a fate worse then death, Subzero had complied.
Once again Subzero unmasked himself and walked through the city with a long robe covering over his outfit. He needed rest before he tried to reach Princess Kitana and the other Earth Realm fighters...if they were even still alive. Subzero used his currency and purchased a night in a single room. It was not 20th century, but it did it's job. Subzero took his Lin Kuei gear off and stretched his body out as he relaxed somewhat. Whenever he took his garb off, he felt like he was not doing his job any longer. It wasn't until this last time that he finally began to wonder, "What job do I have anymore?"
Was it to protect Earth Realm? Was it to bring the Lin Kuei out of the ashes that it had damned itself into? Was it to find his family? Subzero did not know the correct answers. Nightwolf had shown him a memory hidden deep in his mind that lifted part of his spirit. He had a living sister. This he knew of for certain. Now he knew also for certain that his brother was still alive too, and on the side of Quan Chi. And for what reason was this?
Subzero rubbed his face and sat down indian style on the floor next to the bed. He began to meditate and clear his mind of all confusing thoughts. His need for sleep would call when it came, but for now he had to keep his mind clear of all troubles. The last of the images darkening to a candlelit thought were of his sister. What did she look like now? What happened to her? Where was she now? Then quietly those images passed through and then Subzero's mind became silent and still like a calm lake in the morning of dawn. His eyes remained closed the rest of that night. His body relaxed and still. As the hours drew by his mind slowly came drifted off to sleep. His head tilted down and his body lying tenseless.
Subzero began to dream. Smoke filled his mind everywhere he could sense and see. He thought of his friend Smoke. A valued friend, one who he still wished he did not have to kill to save Princess Kitana. All that remained of his friend was a souless machine programmed by the Lin Kuei to destroy one of its human members. Subzero swam through the smoke like thick water wrestling around his body. Was this peace? Were these the begining of answers in disguise. Subzero drifted on and on until his mind came to a circle of light. A flaming skull danced atop a cone of cold wind. Subzero felt the presence of Scorpion somewhere in his dream. Did his mind concentrate into the spirit world? He watched as the flaming skull materialized more and more into the figure that resembled Scorpion. Subzero did not grow tense, he felt he didn't have to. Suddenly the figure resembling Scorpion shot out its spiked living rope at Subzero.
"Get Over Here!" its loud echoed voice screamed out. Subzero felt like a ton of ice that couldn't move. The rope began to burst into flames with another skull at the end of it screaming, or laughing.
Subzero bounced up fromt he floor he was laying on. He was covered in cold sweat. He shook his head and saw on wall by the bed. There was a large written message on it, written in freshly dripping blood.
"CHOOSE YOUR DESTINY" Subzero got to his feet and studied the written words. Who could have written this without waking him up? Was it a sign from the elder gods? It is their words, but why would they write it in blood? Someone came in and wrote that. Subzero sat on the bed and contemplated his next move. Then the dawn came...
