| Storyline: |
After the elder gods created the tournament called Mortal Kombat, chosen warriors with all kind of style competed in it. If outworld manages to win ten times in a row, earths existence will be in their hands... For these nine generations Mortal Kombat was ruled by Outworld's finest warrior prins Goro. Shang Tsung, an earth-born servant of Shao Kahn, soon gained the championship of Mortal Kombat. In order to please the emperor, he not only took the lives of his opponents, but their souls as well. The contest will be held on the island fortress of Shang Tsung located in the center of the lost sea. By seizing control of the Shaolin tournament Shang Tsung tried to tip the scales of order towards chaos. Only seven warriors survived the first battles. After repeated victories in the tournaments to follow, Tsung became over confident before reaching ten victories. Liu Kang was able to defeat him and became the new Mortal Kombat Champion.
Shang Tsung's scheme in the last tournament came to a violent end at the hands of Liu Kang, one of the seven chosen warriors who survived. Facing his execution for his failure and the apparent death of Goro, Tsung convinces Shao Kahn to grand him a second chance. Shang Tsung's new plan is to lure his enemies to compete in the outworld where they will meet certain death by Shao Kahn himself. Convinced of Tsung's plan Shao Kahn restores Tsung's youth and allows him to live. Even as Tsung's plan worked perfectly, it didn't succeed. Now, in the second new Mortal Kombat tournament, Shao Kahn himself was too weak for the earth warrior Liu Kang. Once again was outworld defeated by the new chosen warriors.
Once again, during Shao Kahn's invasion, Tsung turns out to be a very dangerous instrument in the attacks from outworld to gain access to earth. With Shang Tsung roaming freely within the realm of earth, the chosen warriors could expect one of his attacks any moment. But even in this situation Tsung wasn't able to defeat the earth warriors, and finds himself defeated once more.
The sorcerer Shang Tsung was imprisoned in the depths of Shao Kahn's fortress, punished for failing to win the Mortal Kombat tournament in Earthrealm. Periodically he was released to perform tasks for the emperor, until he eventually regained Shao Kahn's favor and was given his freedom. He remained in Outworld risking his life to drain the souls of kombatants in order to sustain his youth.
Shao Kahn had sent orders to Shang Tsung, commanding the sorceror to aid him in the battle against the united forces of Edenia and the Shokan. The message was delivered by Reptile and Shang Tsung followed Shao Kahns orders to report to the Emperor's fortress. But on his way he meets Quan Chi, who had just escaped from the netherealm where he was a prisoner of Scorpion. Quan Chi had come to Shang Tsung with an offer to form an alliance. He explained in detail how the two sorcerors could greatly benefit each other if they joined forces. Shang Tsung ultimately agreed. The first act of the Deadly Alliance would be to eliminate Shao Kahn. Shang Tsung made use of Shao Kahn's mandate to return to his fortress as a means to get within striking distance. After defeating the Emperor of Outworld, Shao Kahn, the two sorcerors traveled to Earthrealm by way of a celestial portal known only to sorcerors and deities. Shang Tsung and Quan Chi traveled to Earthrealm to seek out Shang Tsung's nemesis, Liu Kang. Disguised as Kung Lao, Shang Tsung was able to come near Liu Kang. In the fight that ensued, Shang Tsung had almost lost to Liu Kang's might. But from behind Quan Chi threw the Shaolin monk off balance with a surprise attack... and gave Shang Tsung the moment he needed to kill Liu Kang.
Shang Tsung and Quan Chi left Liu Kang's body where it lay to complete their next task... to locate tha Red Dragon clan member, Mavado, to aid them in the invasion on the Earthrealm. Some time after Shang Tsung, Quan Chi and Mavado had returned to Outworld, Shang Tsung made a pact with two Oni from the Netherealm. He kept them in a chamber in the lower levels of his new palace and fed them mortals to keep them satisfied. In the event that Quan Chi betrayed Shang Tsung, he would release the vengeful Oni upon him.
But when Shang Tsung faces Kung Lao, rage fueled Kung Lao's thirst for revenge. The memory of holding his fellow monk's broken body on the lei tai of the Wu Shi Academy grounds consumed him as he rained blow after blow down upon Shang Tsung. Kung Lao had finally mastered the attack Bo' Rai Cho had taught him. The sorcerer could not withstand his whirlwind assault. Shang Tsung begged for mercy. Kung Lao granted him none. |
